  • Pillow of death

Attorney Wayne Fletcher (Lon Chaney) intends to divorce his wife and marry his secretary (Brenda Joyce), who comes from a wealthy family. When the wife is found suffocated to death, he naturally becomes the suspect.

As others are killed in the same manner and a phony medium also claims Fletcher is guilty, Fletcher begins to imagine his dead wife is communicating with him, making it even more difficult for him to prove his innocence.

Phoney medium, jilted boyfriend skulking around the house, appearing through secret passageways, an attorney accused of murdering his wife and strange voices he hears- some of these things are typical in a murder mystery, but it's given a neat twist here as there's supernatural slant and everything might not be phony as it seems. A real fun film with energetic performances around and an energy to the plot - not forgetting the plot twists.

Jeff Carter (Lon Chaney Jr.) is testing a vaccine for influenza. He is working for tycoon, Roger Graham (J. Carrol Naish), who takes the credit and the profit for Jeff's discovery. Roger cares more about profits than safety. Jeff resigns and is blacklisted by his boss.

Jeff heads to South America to perfect the formula. Graham has used this opportunity to release the drug and romance Jeff's attractive wife, Mary (Brenda Joyce). When Jeff hears that his son has died, he takes revenge.

    J. Carroll Naish plays a vile, slimy, underhanded reptile who uses Chaney, sends him off to south America so he can romance his wife and releases a drug which is untested just to get it on production line - a drug that kills Chaney's son. It all leads to a gruesome conclusion. It's in the black bag. We don't know what's in it until the end. We know it's something unspeakable.

The most interesting aspect is the contrast between Chaney's character and Naish's - idealism vs the big dollar. Naish only cares about making money regardless whether the medicine is ready or not whereas Chaney wants to be thorough in making sure the medication is safe. Brenda Joyce plays Chaney's wife who wants the good life and that's why she meets Naish, goes to his plush house, to experience the high life, but she doesn't crossed that line. It's an engaging thoughtful film -definitely one of the best Inner Sanction films so far ( I have seen Frozen Ghost and Calling Dr Death).

Alex Gregor (Lon Chaney Jr.) is a stage mentalist whose career is shattered when a drunken sceptic that he has invited onto the stage drops dead while in a trance. While the authorities put it down to natural causes, Gregor is convinced that his powers killed the man and immediately quits as a stage performer and retires from public view.

His manager, George Keene, arranges for Gregor to work for Mme Valerie Monet (Tala Birell), who runs a wax museum, where the other employees include mentally unstable former plastic surgeon Rudi Poldan (Martin Kosleck) and Valerie's niece Nina Coudreau (Elena Verdugo).

Gregor is soon caught up in a mess of frustrated desires - Valerie is jealous of the attention he pays to her niece, Rudy is also jealous of Gregor's appeal to Valerie and Nina, and Gregor's stage assistant and fiancee, Maura Daniel (Evelyn Ankers) reappears in his life.

Things come to a head when Valerie is apparently killed, one again by Gregor's psychic powers. But has she really been killed, or is there a sinister plot afoot?

Fairly creepy and well-acted, especially by Lon Chaney Jr who looks suitably perturbed as the guilt-ridden mentalist who ends up working in a wax museum which turns out to be even worse as there's a nut job (Martin Kosleck) and the owner who is jealous of the attention he gives to her niece. I liked the wax museum where I expected fun stuff - to a degree it was, but it got too muddled and confusing. Still, it's fine for a rainy night, but not too striking. Also, there's no ghosts, frozen or otherwise.
