I loved this movie. Everything fits. Great acting, plot, and editing. The special effects are amazing. The superb landscapes go along with a sublime quietness and an appealing minimalism that envelopes the viewer until the end. This movie was for me like getting lost inside a work of art. It was much more than just a story. It was a feeling. And then you got the tiny space craft. What a beauty. And the dreamlike house above the clouds. You want definitely to be there. It's a simple sci-fi story. A beautiful very well told simple story. One of the best I saw. And of course, lets not forget Bob, a delightful touch of genius in a delightful movie.
No, I did not like this movie. It bored me to death. After 45 minutes I wanted it to be over. The prospect of another 135 minutes was just unbearable. And then there was the editing. My guess is the editor probably got bored too and started to fall asleep during editing. The passing from one scene to the next was too often quite awkward I must say. Another thing I did not like was the correctness of the shooting in the sense that there was no space for experimentation. Everything was so flat, clean, and predictable like in a Clint Eastwood film, but even flatter, cleaner, and more predictable. And this cleanness and predictability added of course to the sense of déjà vu, another western among the gazillion westerns shot since cameras were invented. The settlers, the Indians, the bows, the arrows, the knives, the scalps, the pistols, the horses, the perfect scarves, the very nice guys, the very bad guys, the very tough dry hero, the astonishing woman, the amazing plain with the sublime mountain, and so on... And all this, combined with the slow pace, produced the ingredients for a very effective soporific. But for me, the most despairing feature was the abuse of the orchestral soundtrack. I had the impression the orchestra was following me around constantly. And it was indeed, it was everywhere, drumming on my ears, destroying scene after scene with that cheap heroic barking, scrambling moments that just asked for silence. And beware. There are three more Horizon sagas on the track.
Oh, man! I'm still digesting the indigestible. I'm still wondering what Kevin Bacon or Elizabeth Debicki were doing in this second rate B movie, and second rate B movie is an euphemism. The only very short positive note, and you must dig deep to find one, was indeed Bacon. The rest - acting, plot, direction, camera, editing, etc... - was beyond abysmal. That's why my amazement to see this garbage rated 6.4 stars on IMDB. What's wrong people? Never mind. Nevertheless, something fitting in this tragedy was the ironic touch of having a porn actress trying to do some serious horror movie, because it felt that's what happened in real life. Mia Goth just cannot act, like practically the rest of the bunch, and looks are definitely not rescuing her miserable performance.
