This is a very good documentary dealing with 24-year-old pole-vaulter Armand "Mondo" Duplantis from Lafayette, Louisiana. Duplantis is the world record holder at 6.24 meters, and he is currently competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics for the Swedish Team. (His mother is a former heptathlete and volleyball player from Sweden, and his father, a former pole-vaulter and Mondo's coach, is from Lafayette.) This film consists of lots of home videos of Duplantis and his family, interviews, and competition videos, all expertly woven together to create an entertaining and informative documentary. I found the many videos of Duplantis's record-setting, gravity-defying vaults to be especially fascinating!
I happened to find this movie on one of my TV cable channels last night, and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Don't be fooled by the rather low 6.5/10 rating on this IMDB page because it's a funny, romantic, beautiful movie with an interesting plot and a surprise, bittersweet ending that may have you reaching for a box of Kleenex to catch those tears! ;-) A relatively unknown actress to American viewers (Emilia Clarke) plays the lead role of Kate/Katarina, but American viewers will definitely recognize international superstars Emma Thompson & Michelle Yeoh in supporting roles. Kate's beau Tom Webster is played by the handsome, talented, British-Malaysian actor Henry Ewan Golding whom American audiences may remember from the film "Crazy Rich Asians." Last but not least, the beautiful scenes of London during Christmas season are another notable aspect if this movie.
I highly recommend this recent (2019) British movie -- great story, beautiful scenery, & stirring music (sea shanties)!! Moreover, it's based on a true story. I especially liked it since my wife & I used to live near Baltimore & Annapolis in Maryland, which both have a long maritime history, and I participated in a group called The Ship's Company Chanteymen that would meet about once a week (usually in pubs/bars) to sing sea shanties. So, I was very familiar with many of the songs sung in this film.
