I will start by addressing The concerns that I had and I know many others about this before watching it. We some clips have seen some clips and there are parodies and such. It has definitely left its mark on pop culture.

It is definitely true that the CG here understandably on account of how early it was in the development of such is absolutely never at any point truly convincing. We are always aware that we are looking at something that was created in a computer rather than something that existed and they filmed it whether it was built or discovered.

I had not expected that I would find myself loving it regardless. One aspect is the fact that technically everything we see Technically in universe does not exist outside Of the machine that it takes place in.

And I really have to respect how daring they got with it. There are times where it is treated as if it is not special effects but simply something that really is there. The iconic light cycle sequences get to feeling like regular fast paced vehicle scenes and that's amazing.

In general this has plentiful and quite varied action scenes. In addition to what I've already mentioned it also has some physical fighting and quite a lot of tension not to mention gladiatorial sports.

There's a good amount of different vehicles with tanks and these airborne things that I'm not sure exactly how to even describe eriod. The acting is great Warner as always really brings it and bridges does a great job as a cocky loner who grows over the course of it.

The characters are essentially archetypes which works for the story they're telling. It's an anti fascist fable that confronts how similar cororations can be to dictatorial countries. There's also exploration of religion that while not deep I did really appreciate and it's not even preachy.

In some ways it does show its age for example it really does not give women much screen time or a lot to do though there is at least a little bit acknowledgement of them being better at communication and settling conflicts in a peaceful way than us men.

To be clear I am not engaging in gender essentialism here that's a terrible way to try to understand these things rather I am referring to socialization.

I must admit I really got swept up in the rousing nature of this fairly simple yet very compelling tale. There were times when I worried that it would get lost in some of the tropes of the time and genres and most of the time it managed avoid that.

It is definitely one of those cases where you absolutely should not think too hard about the rules and what really happening literally and logically and tech wise. There are quite a few things that are very confusing if you try and a few that have implications that I doubt they were meant to. 7/10.

  • Wow

This review will be based on the version that is found in Atari 50 anniversary Celebration. This was where the abandoned concept was made into reality.

Unlike other emulators this does not feature save states or rewind. There is a level selector that allows you to start at certain ones though it does not let you do so for the last one.

I have seen some describe this as a tower defense. When I hear those words today I think of real time strategy ones where you get to place and upgrade them.

It's important to note that this is not that. There is only one tower and you are the one aiming and firing.

When you reach a new area it will start in a broad view and then you can zoom in. You can choose to attack before you do so although I would definitely say that eventually you're going to want to do it.

Essentially everything you do is moving the reticule and holding down the trigger. You can also choose to use a bomb that eliminates everything in the entire setting however unlike the main cannon this one does not have unlimited ammo In fact it's minimal.

So there's no reason to release and cease your shooting which means you can focus entirely on making sure they go in the ideal direction.

When something is approaching from off screen the edge that it's coming from will glow. Early on this will give you a feeling of elation and being in control confident that you will win.

Later on you will see all of them glow at once and you have to get to a point where that doesn't make you panic, you can keep a cool head and still be prepared. That's the great thing about stuff like this you really get to improve yourself.

There are a number of enemy types and there's a lot of variety in their appearance and movement patterns. They don't even all move fast.

The ones that do will sometimes require you to get ahead of them and wait for them to reach an area and then be blasting that one so you can take care of it.

The ones that don't are sometimes actually more intense. After all they don't feel like they're in any hurry so they must really have the upper hand on you.

Some of those will leave something behind rather than even use projectiles against you. At first I thought they were minds and that if I left them intact they would eventually explode.

After a while I became confident that that was not the case. And then I realized that you can't go over them, you have to go through them.

This means that if you let them drop a bunch of what I guess is detritus you'll eventually not be able to take out anyone who's on the other side of that whilst they have no such problem.

You can take them out quite rapidly and you'll have to. I imagine this plays best with a joystick unfortunately I was not able to test that same thing for two player mode So if that's something you're looking for in a review of this I'm afraid you'll have to look elsewhere.

You do have a shield covering you but your foes can chip away at it and if you take one direct hit past it you lose a life.

I appreciate them not being able to resist making at least one of these aliens that you take on an actual flying saucer. I can guarantee that I would not have been able to either.

When it comes to the graphics I greatly appreciate that they were able to keep intact the original experience. I certainly have fond memories of going to the arcade and playing on some of the machines. It's something that's not really replicated anywhere else but this comes close as does others of its kin.

And at the same time they manage to make it look amazing on today's monitors. The bright and plentiful colors help keep it from becoming visual white noise even when they're a horde in front of you.

The sound design is on point. Explosions and the countless shots all have the exact right sound quality to them where it sounds impactful which is crucial for this kind of thing.

There aren't any difficulty settings and replayability is low. On the other hand this does have the tremendous challenge of one of these.

Don't feel bad if you find yourself failing a lot early on. That's part of the idea here. Keep in mind that this kind of thing was originally made to eat your quarters.

Basically you're supposed to lose countless times until you have worked out exactly how to deal with the various members of the opposition and also have the reflexes to be able to keep up with all of them.

That is the kind of thing that you either love or hate and I 100% understand why a lot of people today find themselves in the latter camp.

Unfortunately I can't really say anything other than that this type of game might just not be your cup of tea and that's not a dig on you or them.

Those of us who grew up on stuff like this sometimes find ourselves missing it in some recent VGS that insist on holding the player's hand which can sometimes be a great thing.

That's part of why it's so awesome that these are being released in this way so that they can be played again today in a very similar way to back then.

I will try not to digress too much but I must note that keen dreams and the 1989 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles arcade were ones I grew up on and it's been truly spectacular to be able to revisit them without having to get my hands on hardware that's that old. 7/10.

It is with great pleasure that I wholeheartedly recommend a feature length experience that will tantalize your senses.. You'll laugh, cry and reevaluate so many things. I am of course referring to the 2019 Lion King... review by YMS.

Since he so thoroughly autopsies this entire thing or rather the first half Hint hint It is difficult to come up with new things to talk about about it. Lindsay Ellis also covered some of the worst parts.

I'm going to do what I can to not simply restate what they express so well and see if I can add anything. In fact I'm going to try to see if I can find anything positive here though I agree that this is bad.

I do think that this helps spell out things that some consider underexplained. Of course some of this is down to those obnoxious pedants who were just trying to find something wrong with a masterpiece that has few flaws. I regret to admit that I used to be one of those people.

The circle of life is underlined and contrasted. This goes into the great responsibility that can come with great power in this case that of being a king. I will admit that the original kind of assumes that you think it's a good thing that royalty exists and has tremendous power with very little accountability.

A lot of the new jokes just don't really work. Of all of the live action remakes of animated Disney classics this is one of the ones that feels the most like a blatant cash grab.

Some go as far as to say that it is in fact the very worst of these. I've yet to watch Mulan or Snow White so I can't compare them to those two but other than that I agree.

Here on IMDB the very lowest rating that you can give anything is one star out of 10. I give one for incredible animation that genuinely does let them do things they never could before even if here it is empty because of resting cat face that makes it impossible to read basically every single character's emotional state.

It gets another for the stuff that it carries over from the original without misunderstanding or ruining which is roughly half of it. And then one more for several truly inspired casting decisions. 4/10.
