It is truly amazing to me how movies that are so really horrible get such good reviews. It must be the phenomenon of groupthink. I really wanted to like this movie. Great cast and I really love period pieces. However this movie had no really coherent plot, it just seemed to be like they made it up as they went along. I didn't like the characters. I really did not like Hailee Steinfeld's character one bit and she's one of my favorites. The scenes where the two brothers were interacting seemed completely out of sync. Not to mention the fact that the two brothers were so alike, Jordan seemed to be playing the same character in a different colored vest. The scene at the end in front of the juke joint seem to be added as an afterthought. Hate to say it but this movie totally blew!
You know, I read the reviews about 40 minutes into the movie and was shocked to find all the good reviews. So instead of going by my inclination to just stop watching the movie, I decided to muddle through until the end, because of all the good reviews. I absolutely hated this movie. I did not like any of the characters, not even the little kid. I have to say that Ben Foster's portrayal of a weasel-like, sniveling, pathetic excuse for a man was spot on. However, I don't watch movies because of the good portrayal of really unlikable characters. There has to be something going on with the review process. There is no other explanation for the good reviews of this film. This was not an enjoyable movie by any stretch of the imagination. There has to be some kind of shenanigans going on in order for so many people to review this film so positively. You just can't even trust reviews anymore. Somebody paid somebody for this film to get good reviews.
I gave it three stars because the storyline actually wasn't that bad, even though it was really quite cliché. The story had potential. The problem with this film was the lead actor. He had no charm. He had no charisma. He could not act. And he was totally miscast for this film. I would imagine that one of the reasons that he played the lead was because he was the executive producer of the film. Don't know how that worked out. The other actors weren't that bad at all. Fairly good acting all around. But the guy who played Eli stunk up the film like a dead skunk in the middle of the road. Frankly, I can't believe I watched the entire film. It's like you just have to find out what happens even though it's excruciating to watch. I think one of the reasons that I'm the first to review is because not enough people watched the film all the way through. If it hadn't been for Jeff Kober, I would've stopped watching after about 20 minutes.
