This film has got plenty of bad reviews, but I think this is rather unjust. It's far better than the Hannibal Lecter films, and will be looked back on as a classic film in a few years. Christopher Lee's Dracula is the very best on screen and this film gives him a chance to frighten the audience with sheer vampire fun! Truly brilliant!
This film could have been a success. The scarecrow looking too human made the conclusion slightly ridiculous. He should have been more nightmarish. Also, two annoying sidekicks, bad animation, an annoying villain and (except one) awful songs made this a failure, at least to me. You'd be better off sticking with the new wave of Disney adaptions then this rubbish.
What can anyone say which hasn't been uttered before? This film is one of the best of its genre, horror, but of course it is a mixture of many others. Romance, and not because of the slightly stereotypical Raoul. The phantom, Erik, shows a true feeling of rejection and tortured love, and even though the unmasking is horrific, Chaney's superb performance bring it a brilliant level of sympathy and pain. Comedy occupies a small amount of the film. Though perhaps the scences with Carlotta's mother perhaps weren't intended to be funny, it's very humourous to see her bashing the managers with a fan! Action. The very thought of Erik driving madly through the Paris streets on a stagecoach brings to mind all sorts of famous chase sequences. And of course, tragedy. I found it very upsetting to see the angry mob beat Erik to death and throw him into the River Seine. This is one of the all time greats and is not to be missed.
