With some hard thinking I remembered 1994-1995 when the show was on the air. I was 13-14 and being both young and a male I never gave the show much thought. Now ten years later I became increasingly intrigued having heard from various articles and people how wonderful the show was. So last week I bought the DVD and watched it.
To put it honestly I was completely enthralled. Never has a show that dealt with life whether teen, or any age been given so much realism and honesty. All the characters were three dimensional and true. The dialogue sparkled with truth and wit that most shows could only wish to capture for a second. I also saw where all the teen shows that try to be real and tackle issues found their influence. The imprint of this show can be found in Dawson's Creek, Gilmore Girls, The OC, and will probably be found for decades to come. At the moment I became hooked, I also became sad knowing full well that once the DVD was over I'd have no more to look forward too. Its just sad that when it premiered it was up against so much competition it could no thrive.
Shows like this leave a mark, the great ones always do. There are plenty of good shows but the great ones are always remembered for not only what they bring to a certain genre in television but to television itself. I only hope that ABC realizes for years to come what they truly let go was a masterpiece of the highest accord.
