I was very happy to see a movies that did not rely on CGI or big names to carry through to the end. The Characters were well developed it was neither too fast or too slow. The director was able to show the beauty and savagery of the vampire with leaning on sappy scenes or over the top gore. The movie is indeed a new spin on an old story and leaves you feeling as if you learned about these characters and not just gazed about them. The choice of sets and location was interesting in that it never really gave you a idea of where they were and the people we meet as the film unfolded were only the ones of any relevance and thus did not waste our time with useless side plots often used to hold up a weak main story, but no in this case.
This movies plays out like one long drawn out sad scene. You never have time to feel anything for the characters because they are too busy being consumed by grief FOR HOURS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. The acting is one step above your average Doritos commercial and the cinematography is film school at best. As for the sound track I think this was the only movies I have ever watched that had one continuous crappy sad song playing throughout. It was like being stuck at a wake with a bunch of kids who just lost their tickets to a Jonus Brothers concert. If you see this DVD at any time RUN RUN or grab it and flush it down the toilet.
I'm surprised there are so many positive reviews for this movie. The plot is easy to figure out and the payoff at the end does not deliver the emotion one would think a topic such as this requires. Will Smith is a very talented actor, however the fact that he can cry and walk around dazed and bewildered does not make this performance a good one by any stretch. The character development is weak and I found it very hard to care who he was and why he was doing what he did. The pain within him is always on the surface in his character but it never really gets a chance to get out and at the end there is little redemption for what he has gone through. The movie relies on the cliché's of old, the new bride, the dying girl, the poor blind guy, the eventual running in the rain scene that tells us he is having a dramatic life change. Blaa Blaa Blaa. I'd like back the 7 hours the movie seemed to steal from me. In a nutshell if you're looking for a typical Hollywood cheap shot at your heart go see this movie, if you're looking for something fresh and new save your money.
