This episode presented a great example of two Gary Ewing traits: weak and dumb. Sure, he's a nice, caring guy, which is important, but throughout the series he's repeatedly been a weakling and idiot who can't keep his zipper up.
This episode also presents something else that's been a little frustrating re-watching this after 30 years: evil wins over good most of the time. Abby has lost very few rounds in 6+ seasons. Chip rarely lost a battle in seasons 4 and 5 until the very end (his demise was a joke, btw). Sumner doesn't lose very often. The show just isn't rewarding if the bad always win. Abby in particular needs to lose a few more rounds.
And so much infidelity in this show! It's like no one cares, and completely ignore their wedding vows. But of course, that's the networks doing. Network execs specifically requested a heavy dosage of sex in the series, according to an interview with Ted Shackelford.
