  • New Scares and a Return of better characters!!

If you were a lover of Dr. Grant in the first movie, this was the film for you. His Indiana Jones type "I am archeologist, hear me roar" sort of survival instincts are just as strong in this as they were the first. Though admittedly there are characters you wish he'd have thrown a punch at. Instead, you really do get a good glimpse at his PTSD from surviving dino hell (that also worked beautifully as foreshadowing).

This is a classic case of the 3rd movie hopscotched over the second to be better and makes it easy to forget Jurassic Park 2 happened.

I, admittedly, have nostalgia goggles on with this movie. I remember being so young and my dad grabbing my seat in the theater at the perfect moment with a raptor and shaking the heck out of it, scaring the living heck out of me!!

But even without the nostalgia, you have amazing and scary moments with dinosaurs you hadn't seen in the first two movies, an introduction to one of the largest carnivorous land dinosaurs that ever existed (the oceans were a whole nother monster entirely!!) And you see them adding things to the raptors since we were learning more about dinosaurs and feathers around this time.

This is definitely a laugh of a movie, one that will leave you on the edge of your seat....and if you enjoy dinosaurs, excited to see ones that they hadn't put in the first two!!

Not mention, who doesn't love a kick butt Ellie and a practical Dr. Grant?!

  • So Close, Then The 90s Attacked

Jurassic Park 2 sort of had an identity crisis.

I've been a fan of the Jurassic franchise. Its literally the only thing that make me lose my mind in a nerdy word vomit. I wasn't a horse girl, I was a dinosaur girl (thank you dad, for raising me on Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, and Star Wars).

This movie started rather strong with Malcolm having some depth beyond a lech who says the iconic "must go faster". He is a survivor, a father, and a significant other afraid over the safety of his family. It built up something amazing.

Especially with an us vs poachers that turned into these people understanding why humans relied upon each other to survive when creatures were now consider prehistoric still stomped a path on our grounds.

Then it went from this humans vs dinosaurs movie to a comedy that (admittedly as an adult makes me have some nostalgia when I saw the Blockbuster Videos) was a poster child for big bix office in the 90s. Brand names everywhere, explosions, a humorous reference to Godzilla.

It was the big movie that could, before it jumped the megalodon....

  • No Ear For Cinema

When you have an amazing story and a budget for Hans Zimmer, and Ellie Goulding....yet you manage to screw up the musical direction of the movie to help tell the story? You need to go back to class.

There were moments that would have benefited from music from artists like Ellie Goulding...but the used Hans Zimmer and vice versa. It took moments that should have felt tense and made the narrative they were telling with the cinematography absolutely not enticing.

Add in, there was so much in the books that they could have used and they all but sterilized it.

Don't get me wrong; fine acting, good music (just improperly placed), and so on....thats why I rated it as I did. Because they still managed to make it entertaining, even for my partner (who avoids most modern movies since he prefers noirs). But as someone who loves music and the original book, it leaves me redirecting and writing it in my head every time.
