I have not seen the movies yet. This is just a review of the 26 episode anime. I understand that they pretty much go hand in hand, but if it matters that much then consider a check point. I will check out the movie soon.
If you spend half as much time on the internet as I do(too much), then you've seen this anime referenced and discussed numerous times across pretty much every place possible. It is is essentially the must watch anime of all time, so either out of FOMO or just curiosity I decided to check it out. I definitely understand why this is so highly raised, but it didn't connect with me very much, especially by the last few episodes(which I will get to).
The animation is incredible. I know it's pretty apparent which parts they "cut corners" on, for lack of a better term. Still for every time a single frame is on screen for a noticeable amount of time there is an incredible fight scene or sequence worth every second of it. Everything looks great. The characters and plot are all endearing, up until the last stretch.
I don't want to sound to cynical(Which I will) but near the end the show starts doing this thing where things just stop happening so a character can be explored in a trippy sequence. That would be pretty cool if it didn't take up an entire episode every time, especially when they happen multiple times and reiterate the same things. The second the stuff with Asuka's mother or Shinji not knowing why he pilots the eva comes up they repeat it three times every episode instead of actually advancing the plot. I absolutely love the 24th episode, but it gets followed up by the two worst episodes of the whole show. Forty total minutes of what i just complained about. Is it trippy, or is it just hard to follow? I won't complain about it feeling incomplete because as of now it is. Those last two episodes just took me out of the whole.
Everything up to that point is great. I wanna get that across but the most infuriating moments being my most recent memory is making it hard. It earned its title as the must watch anime. That doesn't excuse it from completely failing it's tell don't show approach. You should watch it.
