This is a fun, glossy family sci fi Saturday afternoon or Xmas film (yes there is Xmas imagery, if it worked for Die Hard....).
It's not Tales from the Loop but neither do Netflix lay on (much of) the progressive social commentary that they have become known for. It is formulaic but fun, easy to enjoy, derivative but instead of criticising play spot the reference, some are already mentioned in other reviews so I'll just add Stalker (use of the railway trucks to get access) and the original Hanna (where the violent denoument starts in a fun house, the home of a genius who has waited for years for the protege - or in this case his sister).
The visuals are arresting but not as mysterious as Simon Stålenhag's books, there's a Hollywood sheen that seems to be unavoidable - or is it - how come Tales from the Loop didn't look like this, thank goodness, and understandably with the target audience they didn't want corpses and crows picking out eyeballs.
Not a dystopic masterpiece, watch it for the excellent robots, the voice actors, the sometimes cool soundtrack, was Yoshimi too obvious, it worked, who cares?
PS Go watch Tales from the Loop and then Better than Us.

Technically a brilliant accomplishment, especially for it's age, the visuals, especially of Paris 2054 are incredible, they could be part of a huge Taschen table top book on the future. Side note - the monochromatic Sin City was released the year before, but was made in live action to look like a comic book, Renaissance is a mad comic book that didn't even need to like live action.
Storyline is classic noir stuff, with a futuristic and anti-Corporate spin which after 2021 doesn't seem far fetched at all, except our friends with the blue sign wanted to achieve the opposite outcome of what Avalon, the megacorp in this film, wanted to achieve. It is not hard to follow unless you are smoking your carpet.
Grumbles - the lip sync isn't always good, some movements were a little clumsy but some of it, most of it, is thrilling.
It is a tour de force in some respects, and never less than very good.
