This very strange film is certainly unique. You only have to watch the first five minutes to get an introduction to what this is going to be like. Black-and-white, cold, and very strange.
It is nonetheless a great film. The cast are amazingly bizarre, and the Estonian folklore background is the likes of which I've never seen before. You will be introduced to the kratt, of which I had to hop online to learn about. Fascinating creature. The portrayals of the plague and the devil are fascinating.
The film seems a bit narrow at times as though it may have been on a tight budget, but nevertheless the film makers have done a great job here and this is a unique piece of cinema.

Magnificent. Certainly the greatest war series (or movie) ever, probably the greatest TV series of all time.
Watched it for a second time recently and had forgotten how superb it is. I never give 10, but I cant fault this. The sacrifices these magnificent men made should never be forgotten, and every generation should watch this (shown in schools?).
Superb cast of many future class actors are excellent, close to perfect direction and top-shelf production for something 20+ years old. The screenplay and events needed no padding as the real events would be unbelievable fiction, if not historical fact.
A must watch at least once, for everyone.

What the hell was that?? $100 million wasted on that script, who funded this ego-piece?
Im unsure even what genre this is. It's a visually splendid mess, confusing and pointless, and as others have suggested Adam driver is just terrible in everything he does. Why he keeps getting these lead roles is beyond me, from the days of Star Wars, he drags down every movie he appears in. Bit like Tom Cruise in that regard.
I'm a fan of original films, and a fan of science-fiction and fantasy. But this was just garbage, and worse than that, pretentious garbage trying to be something there was planned on being a classic. Nothing that sets out to be a masterpiece ever is.
