  • Not bad

The worst part of this movie other than the blatant and unapologetic racism we just don't need more of right now, and the unnecessary sex/pornographic dialogue scenes, was Michael B. Jordan's sub par acting and egotistical performance. I almost didn't see this movie in the first place when I knew was in it. He stinks up everything he touches and he's not talented enough nor attractive enough to justify why he continues to be cast when there are so many black actors with superior talents out there. Please Ryan Coogler, stop punishing us by casting him. He's the same character in every movie with no nuance whatsoever. I felt like he directed himself and wrote his own lines and background story.

That said, it was better than I expected it to be and I'm glad I watched it. Wunmi Mosaku by far blew the rest of the cast away with her acting chops and I hope to see more of her. The music choices in general were great, I could watch the Irish music scene over and over and never be full. But what really got me was Buddy Guy. I did not see that coming and it had me in tears for a while. I was lucky enough to see Buddy Guy and Jonny Lang perform live decades ago and never felt so alive from music in my life, then suddenly got the point of this movie. This music doesn't come from the devil, it comes from higher up. I'm an atheist but nothing makes me feel more soul than blues, and blues is for everyone.

  • Should be seen once

I don't even know where to start. I love Zach Cregger after having met him on tour for his WKuK sketch comedy show years ago. He was a very funny, kind and genuine guy. I say that to say I knew I had to see this movie opening night to support his career. This movie checked so many boxes for hype. Josh Brolin replacing Pedro Pascal really excited me and gave this movie more legitimacy, then Julia Garner added to it even more. Both of them are well known at this point, but highly underrated and underused. Between those three people being involved in my favorite genre of horror, what could go wrong?!

The trailer was better than the movie, unfortunately. It has the perfect tone and creepiness going for it, leading you to believe there will be no goofiness like in Barbarian. However, as ridiculous and over the top as Barbarian was, it was the better movie. It felt almost more realistic in some ways and felt more scary than funny, though it had both going for it. People in the theater were laughing at Weapons so much, and I'm not sure it was all intentional. Comedy and horror are great when done right, but not when forced. The Crazies is a good example of that, it's got to be one of the best ever made. It's so well written and actually scary with mostly fleshed out characters that it's highly rewatchable. This one, not so much. The pacing was too slow at times, the narration unnecessary and just plain misleading and incorrect, and the ending even more over the top and unbelievable than its predecessor. The acting was fairly decent, but Julia and Josh could have used more backstory. Some scenes with them felt forced and unnatural for their characters.

That said, it's a horror movie! It's pointless to be too critical when we need more movies in the genre like this. Zach is willing to take risks and while he's a little too creative, he's putting out far better content than the likes of Jordan Peele and it's far less political, which the world really needs right now. I'm so glad I was able to forget the real world and it's problems for two hours and sit with this crazy world, even if I'd probably only see it once.

  • Could have been decent

Fifteen minutes into this and it's obvious which demographic they made this series for... and I guess it's not me or any women like me. As a mixed woman who votes independent and and doesn't care for the whole PC culture, this show is already presumptuous and offensive to just about anyone who isn't in the minority of minority groups. If it's insulting to my intelligence, who else could stand to listen to this contrived and unrealistic dialogue?! No one talks like this! And only the worst of the worst 'incels' speak or behave that way, it's certainly not common enough to place as a main plot in a television series. Hollywood really needs to learn its lesson and give us stories that resonate with the average person, not California hipsters. I watched this for Jessica Biel because I normally like projects she's involved with, but this one really misses the mark. Please do better.
