  • Sound Worth Following

If you are into films that are original and make you think as you leave the theater, this is the film to see while it is still in theaters. Christopher Denham and Nicole Vicius portray a couple attempting to infiltrate and expose a cult led by Brit Marling's Maggie but find themselves in too deep.

The film, presented with little back story and minor music cues leaves only the actors and scenes to bring the emotion and interest. All the actors do a good job with the material and if you go with the scenario being presented it's quite engrossing. The end result is a film that forces the viewer to do some of the heavy lifting to determine if Maggie is who she says she is or if it is all a scam.

  • Close and McTeer make the film worth it

Albert Nobbs, the seemingly 30 years in the making film about a 19th Century woman's deep repression of her essence and her becoming a master butler in a Dublin hotel does not not readily equip itself for the big screen. This film could have potentially become a one trick gimmick or melodrama and at times it borders right on the edge but with Glenn Close as the lead and Janet McTeer in a sturdy supporting role it is redeemed.

Close's mannerisms and complete immersion into the character is evident and the film showcases both her talents and also tries to intertwine some upstairs/downstairs issues to a lesser degree of success. Close's slow march toward rediscovery of herself as a person and as a woman is what keep you interested.

  • The Lives and Love of New Yorkers

For a very low budget independent film, this is a solid look at one night in the lives of a dozen or more New Yorkers. It is a series of vignettes in which a myriad of individuals are presented and all will at some point be at a live music performance in a bar. Each are snapshots of relationships points either romantically or friendships.

Melissa Leo is the biggest name in the cast and once again gives full commitment to the role. There are a lot of unknown faces and yet all put in fairly solid performances. There are probably too many characters on the canvas and some work better than others, yet at least one will keep your attention until the end.
