This film could have been a masterpiece if the motivations and situation had been a bit clearer. We are left with an endless trek through the back roads with no destination in sight and no reason to feel any sympathy for either protagonist. There are several moments in the narrative that leave you guessing and wondering why the situation turns out as depicted.When you add up the miles traveled in the red Ford, it seems incredulous to say the least.As for the ending...well, you be the judge. You may be disappointed, confused, sad or in awe..it's hard to know what the film maker's intent was, but then again, that's the attraction of cinema.The expansive outdoor shots are delightful and beautifully photographed.
This production has a lot going for it, dated as it is. Pavarotti and Price are stunning vocally if not physically, but one soon forgets physical appearances when hearing such lyric beauty. Simon Estes is outstanding, and the ballet a delight, especially the star turn by Holder. Costumes are extraordinary, though I sometimes wondered how they kept those back-facing hats from falling off (!). Musical pacing is a bit slow in parts, and the orchestra has a few uncomfortable moments, but on the whole the production succeeds, largely because of the outstanding cast. This production will stand the test of time, owing to the documentary value of Pavarotti in his prime.
A gorgeously photographed film, to be sure, but what about the plot line? Some interesting ideas are never fully developed, and some of the details are a bit incomprehensible, for example the baby crocodile in the yacht and the idea that our hero can survive comfortable in an abandoned apartment complex. Quibbling aside, it is an enjoyable film to watch, even though the final scene at the closing credits is a bit much.
