Looking back it's hard to believe that the cast playing students, particularly, were once such relative unknowns. Granted, Elijah Wood is really the only one who went on to become A Huge Star, but the rest of them still went on to build solid careers. On top of that, they hold their own opposite the likes of Piper Laurie, Robert Patrick, and Bebe Neuwirth!
The movie itself is damn good fun, too. A high school based take on Invasion of The Body Snatchers with little nods to The Thing and Terminator 2 among other notable sci-fi greats, it plays really well with the tropes of the genre and does a decent job of showing how quickly this kind of invasion would move through a small town and how easily it would take over the world. It also kinda helps that there's a good dash of nudity in there lol
Yes, the nostalgia is carrying a lot of the weight to get the 8 I gave the movie, but I love it so much that IDC.

The ending wasn't fantastic either, but it DID pick up a bit in the third act. The first two thirds though? It felt like it was trying TOO hard to be clever, and esoteric, even Lynchian in it's disjointedness. Either that or it started off perfectly normally and it just failed to engage me? The ending was a lot more cohesive though, and at least gave Pete Davidson something interesting to do?
In all fairness, there was nothing I actually disliked about this movie, it just never really had me invested...

Another day another undercooked remake, and another waste of a talented cast.
Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Maika Monroe particularly are usually far more reliable than this - though Riki Lindholme, Martin Starr, and Raúl Castillo are as solid (if not great) as ever - but like with so many remakes of late the script just isn't what it should be.
Enough has been changed from the, frankly incredible, original that it doesn't feel super stale and unnecessary but they haven't done enough to actually justify making it.
I'd really only recommend this to those who are suckers for either of the leading ladies because it's without.
