I don't know if I can write ten lines about this movie. I do know that I could watch it ten times. I do feel the movie does serve a purpose in that it is a viable alternative to taking drugs and a lot cheaper also. I have seen the movie twice and I thought it was excellent, say what you will and you will probably be right. I think this movie can be many things to many people. I plan to see it again tonight. I got more from the movie the second time I viewed it and suspect I will get even more the third time. For me it was like watching a comic book come to life. The characters and the acting was superb. Each actor brought the characters to life. I had never heard of Philip K. Dick and I was unfamiliar with the subject matter prior to seeing the movie. I was just looking for a movie to watch and decided on something I knew nothing about, and was I surprised.
I have seen this movie three times and was moved each time I saw it. I even found posters at my local library COME READ WITH AKEELAH Before you can spell, you must learn to read well. Take the AKEELAH AND THE BEE READING Challenge. Akeelah Anderson a precocious eleven-year old girl from south Los Angeles with a gift for words. Akeelah's aptitude wins her a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and in turn unites her neighborhood who witness the courage and inspiration of one amazing little girl. This movie made quite an impact on me when I first saw it at the Olympia Movie Theater here in Miami. I have it on VHS (which is of poor Quality) and on Laserdisc which is fantastic and now DVD which is superb. Much has been said about Otto Preminger's directing style, however he sure got what he was going after. I believe The Cardinal should have received more academy awards.
