One of the best Mexican TV series I've seen. Characters were nicely relatable and varied (especially women! So nice to see that!), although some side characters were a bit stereotypical, they were played in warm & at times humorous but not over the top way, resulting in some laughs. Story line was good and kept my attention well and I loved the way 1970s was portrayed so vividly. Also the portrayal of police corruption vs the ordinary hero protagonist was such a refreshing take compared to Hollywood "copaganda". Definitely recommend this to anyone interested in crime, Mexico, 1970s fashion and culture or good TV over all!
I was personally very touched by the story, being a young woman with not so rosy family background & Sean Penn's character reminded me a lot of my own dad, felt a lot of sympathy towards him and his daughter. Also the era the movie was set in has always felt achingly nostalgic to me and cinematography was beautiful. I thought it would've been interesting to see more of the dad's criminal activity and more linear approach to the story rather than the short flashbacks back to childhood, although the ones at the very end worked well to bring out emotion. Some scenes with music went on a little too long for my liking too. Acting was good. Definitely not a bad movie, but I can understand how someone who didn't relate to it as much wouldn't be as captivated by it, it could've been made more engaging.
I was shocked to see how great rating this show has and can't help but feel it's not motivated by the real quality of this show. The premise is interesting and locations around the world are absolutely beautifully shot but nothing worth to mention happens in whole 1st season, after which I stopped watching. The only two characters I found a bit interesting were the African guy and South Korean woman, I'd rather watch them have their own shows than the others talking about same fake deep shit episode after episode, like teenagers doing MDMA for the first time. And even though I'm bisexual, those sex/orgy scenes made me cringe so bad.
