Jesse Owens the man was an incredible athlete who raced during a terrible time of human history. This movie focuses more on the politics of the time than on Owens the man. A better version of this story is the 1984 movie, "The Jesse Owens Story."
The CGI in this movie is obvious and distracting. Jason Sudeikis as coach Larry Snyder is not entirely convincing as the inspirational coach the audience wants to believe Owens had as a young man. Owens is quoted as saying Snyder had him fired up for the Olympic races. Sudeikis does not convincingly pull this off; he does not portray the fierce passion of champions and competitors.
"Race" does a nice job of recognizing the accomplishments of Eulace Peacock and Luz Long, and showing how the USA Olympic leadership betrayed Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller to appease the Germans. However, it gives a pass to several Nazi sympathizers.
Overall, this is a moderate feel good movie about a man whose story deserves excellence.
