  • A positive experience.

I remember it from my youth - as in "being aware of it and not watching it ... perhaps except for one of those cut-together movies", so after struggling to get through Space 1999, I thought this would be a good follow up project.

However, unlike Space 1999 where I struggled to get through even a single episode, I had no problem with this and was quite entertained watching up to 3-4 episodes in an evening.

It has that 70's sci-fi charm and is - for the most part - okay written.

Starbuck is a fun character and my favourite. I remember the uproar when the character was recast as a woman in the 2003 reboot, but having seen the OG series now, I can honestly say that Katee Sackhoff was perfectly cast in the role.

But enough about the reboot. I liked the 1978 series and had a good time watching it. What will I watch next? Perhaps Blake's 7? 🤷‍♂️😄

  • Hopeless situation...

Not only are the crew on the moon in a hopeless situation, so are the viewers that sit down to watch this show.

I remember the show from when I was around 10 years old, but don't think I watched much of it - and haven't watched it since, so I thought it was time to watch it all from end to end, and now, two months later and having done so ... oh dear - no amount of rose-tinted glasses will save this show.

I know I already loved sci-fi back when I was 10, but since I can't remember why I didn't watch more of Space 1999 back then, perhaps I could tell, even back then, that it just wasn't very good?

And going back to it now, I can honestly say that I'm "happy it's over" and I will never waste a minute on it again. Where do I start?

The biggest problem are the stories - they're just too amateurish and terribly written. Back then I was already a fan of Star Trek: TOS and Doctor Who and they were both well written and two shows I still enjoy to this day - and they also had relatively low budgets, but perhaps the low budget is just more visible in Space 1999 and certainly not helped by the terrible acting.

Because, yes, the acting is on the same level as the writing, Martin Landau is just a terrible actor (at least here, I think I need to watch North By Northwest again soon, to give him a chance to redeem himself) - in Space 1999 he has the warmth, charm and acting ability of an icicle. Barbara Bain is the same - I'm not sure she could even play a convincing corpse on a crime show. I do like Nick Tate as Alan Carter and Catherine Schell as Maya though. Catherine Schell was the highlight of season 2 - not only is she super cute, but she genuinely seemed to have fun with the material she was given. She made it bearable to sit through season 2, with its obviously lower budget and terrible music ... which got worse and worse as season 2 went on.

So, in short, no rose-tinted glasses and nostalgic feelings are going to save this turd. It wasn't all garbage though - there were some good episodes, but I don't need all of both hands to count them.

  • I wish I could say this episode was terrible...

    ... but I can't - I didn't watch it.

I have watched ALL episodes up to now, but I have hated every single one of the previous "documentary style" episodes, and knowing that, I skipped this one. I'm a bit of a completionist so I RARELY skip episodes, but this one I had no interest in watching, and I can tell from other reviewers that I made the right choice.

I guess the only positive thing coming from skipping this episode - apart from not wasting an hour and going straight to episode 16 instead - is that I also didn't have to sit through another second of the showrunners son. I can't express enough how much I hate him. I hope the character ends up in a wood chipper, Fargo style.
