I saw this movie in early 2009. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It makes me want to see more films like this one. The songs and music are great and also the cinematography. I recorded the ending song and keep it on all my media players. I'd like to know the name of the traditional song sung by some folks in the truck. I rate the movie 7.5 out of ten. Oftentimes it is quite enjoyable to witness cultures not your own and this film is one such treat. This film is for people who enjoy making their own life decisions, so the ending is intentionally not absolute. People who would rather live their lives vicariously will perhaps find the ending dissatisfying.
I bought this video tape. I like it and it's much better than the b-movies that get a lot of sales because certain "fair" skinned people have enough sense to support their own. They also come here to pan it so it gets even less viewership. Even our own people can't seem to comment on it w/o mentioning trash like, "poor acting", etc. Nothing about this film is bad. This is a good movie, very good, all things considered, meaning these persons are not seasoned pros but they pulled off a great movie right out of the gate. This reason alone is why those aforementioned people make it their obligation to criticize it. They hope to, thereby, remove any ambition or inspiration from YOU in doing great things like movie-making.
I remember seeing this movie at a theatre back in 1986 when it first came out. I enjoyed it a lot. It starred Akosua Busia, who is now married to movie writer, producer and director John Singleton. I thought Akosua was so beautiful back then. I vividly remember her lovely dark skin and gorgeous lips. She played in quite a few more movies back in the '80s too. Some commenter claims he saw it just ten years ago and he complained about the audio and visual quality. He obviously didn't see the theatrical release, which had fine quality. He probably saw a poor copy of a video tape which would likely explain the quality issues he mentioned. If a title is only available on VHS, I always go to reputable renters like the national companies because they carry the original tapes, not duplicates made from a single original tape like many smaller video stores do.
