  • Intriguing introduction to a universe I want to see more of.

Full disclosure: I was privileged to be able to do a little work on Black Zone, and consider several of the people involved to be among my favorite people in the Kansas City film community, so this is not an unbiased review.

I'll start with my main complaint about the film. It was originally meant to be a series, but was condensed into feature-length when funding dried up, and that does show. Watching it, you are left with a large number of questions that this movie never clears up, and there are numerous characters I simply want to see more.

But while that is a complaint, I do think that can be seen as a good thing that it does leave me wanting more. I want to see more of the Sara Ellington, Doris Reynolds, and Dr. Blake characters, and see their stories fleshed out more. I am very curious to see more about the aliens and how they ended up on earth.

To reiterate, although it has its flaws, I genuinely enjoyed Black Zone and fervently hope to see more of this universe.

I also want to add that I think everyone in the cast did an amazing job, and I'm especially inclined to praise the performances of Andrea Fantauzzi, Jennifer Seward, and Matthew Schmidli.
