Acting superb by all- I think Cruise is always good. The plot moves quickly but with so many and lengthy action scenes it starts to be fatiguing and resembles Perils of Pauline at every step. I found the first 2 hrs very good... then the Hollywood incredibility kicked in and the last 40 minutes or so was just over the top... then preachy, overdramatic. Obviously others ate all it up, but Wife would've given it 5 stars. Special effects are great, interesting, captivating. Intricate plot. It will keepyou the n the edge of your seat. If you go, assume you're watching a comic book superhero movie.
I don't see this as either as excellent or as vapid as others. The acting is very good, and Kerry Washington and Ebony Obsidian have the task of carrying the film, and do so well. This is a heart-wrenching look at a painful period in American history, and how an unlikely battalion of African American women labored at an important mission. I'd say this is 40% about the mission and 60% about whote supremacist attitudes and racism. This is uncomfortable to have pounded in our faces but I don't know what you'd expect in todays day and age with African American power brokers at the helm: they see it AS a story of racism. In that regard, Hidden Figures is a much better told story, while addressing the racism in place at that time. Military historians on this site are lambasting technical errors. While none affect the plot or story line, it gives one pause wondering what else was dispatched to make room for a story of racist attitudes. Maybe too long. Another person who watched with me agreed the first hr or half could be tightened up. I can see where so many others are offended by the relentless depiction of prejudice but this IS told from the black perspective and the blatant racism if our past IS ncimfortable. Not wanting to err on either side, I'd give it a 6 and say- -though long--it functions well as an historical piece. Women should love it for its depiction of strong women.
Many of these are relatively easy and don't require a lot of interaction mentally but this one is complex, and the outcome undetermined and in question from a variety of well constructed forces which play naturally, not contrived or made with characters in the extreme. And the acting is so powerful!! I hadn't been a fan of John Saxon but he shows such a variety of depth and emotions here, as does Jacqueline Scott who plays his wife, and all are perfectly believable. Even the kids with their small supporting roles demonstrate good acting chops. I don't think there's a gratuitous or irrelevant moment in the bunch.
