Amy Adams is so much better than this hyper-histrionic script. It lacks narrative drive, li.its its audience to mothers overwhelmed and underwhelmed by the claustrophobic closenes of baby-rearing, not child-rearing. It failed to gain any traction with me, especially when she is pulling strands of gloppy hair from a lump in her liwer back or views a growth of fuzz in same area. Witches, warlocks, whatever...it just made mincemeat out of any compelling storyline. Couldn't get the point the writer or dire tor was trying to make and possibly neither could this otherwise talented actress. Waste of film and two good actors (Scoot McNairy has been in such as Argo) as well as the twenty minutes I will never get back. Hear this: asking a viewer to go along for your ride, you'd better make it worth th price of admisdion or at least provide jumping off points. Overall, yish.
My problem with this well-acted but self-indulgent series is it's shock value, gore for gore's sake. Too many repulsive scenes as if that pushes the intellectual or artistic landscape. Movie explores the time-worn dilemma of identity...who am I? Without the normal sign posts of id, like family, neighbors, work, religion, education? Am I my deeds ramming themselves back at me in some karmic dance? Am I my essence, pure and untouched if not for life's vicissitudes? Are my bad deeds and what I've evolved into dependent on circumstances. Does free will trump destiny? Is the "man" redeemable by the love of a woman so naive, so unsophisticated, so smitten by his handsome appeal and seeming helplessness that she falls in love with him? Are any of us redeemable? The series doesn't really drive that one home...4 balls, 3 strikes.
1999? Even back then, we knew where things were headed. Prescient or predictable? That Roe v Wade was always so vulnerable, that the Supremes could overturn the law of the land, that women would again have to struggle with other people governing their bodies, relinquishing freedom of choice and the privacy of a decision so personal...who could have thought it. It scares me...what other laws will get overturned? The acting and script do justice to the breadth and depth of debate. Alabama, Texas, Louisiana et al.,...conservative states which call abortion murder, all poor states which neglect those lives once they enter the world, poorly educated, poorly fed, some abused. Prison terms and accusations of murder. Gawd...
