This documentary is excellent.
I grew up in Minnesota so am no stranger to tornadoes and the fear you feel when the sirens go off.
161 people died in Joplin and the city was obliterated.
I went into this not knowing what to expect and am so impressed by the first person storytelling - and that is what this is, a diverse group of young people (at the time) describing in detail and with original videos what happened to them.
It's terrifying.
I don't want to say much more as it will spoil it. Needless to say the people we come to know through their stories survived (one extremely luckily), but many others did not.
Joplin and its people are scarred but they persevere.
This documentary is two hours long but it flies by. It is never boring. And the stories are mesmerizing.
Recommended.

I love it when a show grips me right away although I can't quantify why it happens. It just does and this one did that. It only took a few minutes for me to settle back and say "yes!"
It has a lovely look to it. Filmed beautifully on location... and very atmospheric.
Killian Scott is very good as the increasingly tortured detective. His female parter we come to learn is tortured as well. The two have a charismatic presence alone and together.
The plot is apparently a mashup of two books and that mashup is done chaotically. Two different plots that don't sync. You're left wondering at the end (more of the end later) what they have in common. Why we are made to keep track of the disparate stories, and we are left wanting.
It is slow. The eight episodes, despite the two stories, could have been six. Maybe five (oh but never an odd number right?)
I loved the scenery and loved watching Killian Scott navigate a very complex character.
I did not love the ending. I was expecting something that would tie the two stories together in a way that made sense. It doesn't happen and because of that there is dissatisfaction and disappointment.
Also, to be honest, I'd wished for a happier ending. It isn't terrible but it is sad.
Still it is wonderful seeing good television coming out of Ireland and I am inspired to read the books on which this is based.

This is free on Peacock right now.
This movie is horrible. There's nothing positive I can say about it. Not even about the costumes (which the brilliant accuracy of I read threads about in Social Media)
I just hated this. It's ugly and disturbing and grotesquely violent. The latter you might expect but this is just so over the top awful in all ways, including the violence that in truth I can't believe I sat and watched the whole thing. I wish I had turned it off sooner, or better yet never watched it at all.
The acting was silly and so exaggerated as to be almost comical. The plot almost non-existent and nonsensical. It was filmed to be difficult to SEE because it is so dark.
And Orlock's BREATHING. What is that???
As I sit here I just have to wonder why they made this movie. Why does this film even exist? For the life of me, I can't come up with an answer.
1 star instead of zero because there's a cute cat in it.
