Brother Orchid was a parody on the gangster films from the early 30's with Edward G. Robinson squinting, grimacing, and wisecracking his way through the movie as the tough guy with a heart of gold. Humphrey Bogart plays Robinson's swarmy antagonist, paying his dues before High Sierra made him a bonafide studio system star.
The talented, but under appreciated Allen Jenkins is Robinson's loyal henchman, but he disappears halfway through the movie.
Ann Southern as Robinson's ditzy, platinum blond girlfriend was another under utilized studio actor. Southern was a talented comedienne, actress, dancer and singer. She could do it all.
It was the fine performances by all the above that saved this standard formula studio flick.

This show could have had the whole package. But it went on for one season, maybe two, too long.
Ephraim Goodweather is a tragic Shakespearean style hero. His innate flaws make those he loves best vulnerable to the Master's manipulation and turn on against him to apocalyptic proportions. Everything he touches becomes victims of his narcissisism. But Eph can't see it. To him he's just a nice guy trying to save the world and those in his orbit just don't understand him.
All of the actors are good, but the best is Thomas Eichorst. Richard Samuel deserved an Emmy for his performance as the Nazi SS officer turned vampire and devil's favorite valet.
