  • When the sequel is better than the first movie!

What can I say? I went to see this movie with an expectation to see a comedy movie revolving around metal music, its subcultures and oh boy, did it deliver! One of the best good mood movies I have seen in ages and a real delight for anyone who understands metal culture and how it is.

I have seen the first movie and while I liked it, it felt more like a drama movie of how it is difficult to live in a small countryside town when you don't fit in. The guys being metal heads was like a side bonus - they could have been anything else. Here, in the sequel, Turo and his band members being metalheads is the carrying force the movie relies on. As it should! I have to say, from bottom of my heart, that this movie was so, so much better than the first one. More on the comedic side and hey, there was a lot more heavy metal music, too!

Xytrax is again one of the best things this movie has to offer. The joke of Xytrax liking some other bands than the pure black metal or "real metal" ones was a delight because every single black metal guy I know has a secret band crush on something "wrong". One of the guys I know loves Madonna, while the other is a big fan of Ayumi Hamasaki, and so on. There are lots of little treats for metal fans and people understanding the subculture like these in the movie. Spot an Immortal reference, Peter Steele and Misfits!

I was super happy to see Oula getting more role in the movie. He actually makes a great addition into the team and the band feels coherent, even when Jynkky from the first movie is missing. Oula didn't just take Jynkky's spot, he became part of the band. Bravo!

I also loved that the movie touched the topic of stardom and being really famous; the audience doesn't come to listen to our music and doesn't care what we want to say with our lyrics - they only came to ogle us and wish to get into our pants. There's no privacy, no genuine care, just lust for a piece of meat on a stage. Not to mention how much money rules in the music business, metal included.

Definitely a big praise for this movie. It is a good mood movie and really made for the metal audience - a general audience might not get as much out from this movie as the target audience but it is okay. It's worth it.

  • The 2nd movie is so much better

I watched this movie after watching the sequel Heavier Trip. The sequel was a delight, especially to an old metalhead like me, so I had perhaps a bit too high expectations for this movie.

Generally speaking, this movie (when compared to the sequel) is about life in a small country town, where everyone who differs from the norm is treated badly. Our main character Turo keeps hearing gay slurs and is a target of a constant mocking by pretty much everyone, just because he does not fit in. Apparently, the other guys also get their fair share of this same treatment, even when we don't really see it in the movie - after all, the star here is Turo.

Now, speaking of such a behavior, Turo and his buddies could have been anything else than metalheads, and the story would still been the same; vegan, foreigners, only half-Finnish, from South Finland or just from a neighboring bigger city, hippies, nerds who love to study and value higher education etc. I was waiting for more jokes regarding metalheads and its culture - like in the sequel - but while they were there and they were really delightful, it was not necessary to say that the guys being looked down was due to them being metal guys. Heck, even them having long hair would have been enough of a reason for this drama of "Not fitting in and everyone is bullying us".

The movie also plays jokes on a black guy being a black guy, and Arabs being terrorists, which can be seen racists by some people. The sequel lacked these elements.

Miia was a delight and a really wonderful depiction of a countryside woman who is both a sweetheart and a sassy woman who knows her value. A special mention goes to her!

Another special mention goes to Pasi/Xytrax, who is a saving grace in many scenes and depicts black metal sub culture accurately. And, of course, he works in a library. All black metal guys I know are just like that!

In short, I would recommend that you go to see the sequel. It is so much better than this one.

  • Entertaining time loop movie

I debated whether I should give this 6 or 7 because I didn't feel that I wasted my time watching this but the ending didn't really bring anything on the table. If the ending would have wrapped this up somehow, I would have given it a one more star. Perhaps the poetic irony is that the movie itself is a loop?

I personally didn't like the relationship drama this involved and the female character was - from my female point of a view - written annoyed but hey, what can I do? I rarely see well written females anyway. Their point is always be there to be the protag love interest, someone who whines and complains, someone who needs to be rescued, someone we can peep when she doesn't notice - or many of these choices. She was unfortunately a whiny complainer who needed to be rescued because she's a woman and acts irrationally at times.

Having said that, this is a nice movie just for the fun of it, and worthy to see for those who enjoy the time loop thropy.
