  • Watching while reading a book about Mary and Elizabeth

I've watched this today when I'm midway through a book written in French about Mary and Elizabeth called something like "the dangers of marriage".

First thing that caught my attention is how negatively both of Mary's marriages in Scotland are depicted. According to the book I'm reading (a historical book), Mary was initially very passionate in her relationship to both men, mostly probably because of the sex, since her French marriage had remained chaste. Nothing like that appears in the film, apart from one scene with Darnley before the marriage.

Another thing that has also seemed a bit lacking in my humble opinion is Mary's not very good French accent. I'm very fluent in French, and I think since Mary moved to France when she was 6, her accent should have been as perfect as that of her ladies, which it isn't. These period films, which spend a huge amount of money in many different things, seem to often disregard paying a bit of attention to such things. For example, in the "Elizabeth" films, there's a scene where one allegedly Spanish sailor speaks in Spanish during the Armada incident, and the accent is horrendous; same thing with the "Tudors" series where the actress playing Queen Catalina speaks an awful Spanish to a Spanish ambassador with a clear and anachronistic Latin American accent. I'm a native Spanish speaker

As a linguist I really don't see the point of introducing foreign language when it's totally unnecessary if you're not going to do it properly.

  • Charming

As many people here, I loved this series and watched both seasons in just two days during Xmas 2024. I see a new season is coming and am delighted, I cannot get enough of lovely Joanne and her big smile. My only complaint is that there seems to be a rather huge mismatch between the English subtitles and the original version; my Norwegian is not too good, but is enough to realize the English version often is very different to what they're saying in NW, or even in Danish in S1, a language I understand well. It's difficult to understand why translators would take such liberties with the script, missing a lot of the wit and charm of the dialogue.

  • Fun and crazy

I'm writing a review just because I find the rating this film has right now on IMDb is really unfair.

This is a highly original and crazy family movie which kept me entertained from beginning to end.

It isn't Mexican as one reviewer wrote, but Spanish. The mother of the family is Mexican and several other characters have Latin American or Brazilian accents, plus one has a British accent. The rest speak in Spanish from Spain.

If you want to spend a couple of hours enjoying very original sci fi content for a family audience, please give it a chance. If you're Spanish you will certainly enjoy the great cast.
