I saw Lauren Grimson in a film recently so wanted to check this one out. Again, she is one of the high points of the film. Sadly the film itself suffers from long drawn out scenes that don't seem to add to the story, plot or character development and I found it hard to get past the first twenty minutes. It's well made, high production value, but either the script needed a brutal cut down or the edit did. Probably both. There are so many possession films out there and many are great, many absolutely suck. This is unfortunately leaning more towards the lower end of the pile. The acting was pretty terrible at times and relying on Mr Wolf Creek to save it was probably not the best idea. I love indie Aussie horror but this one is a miss for me.
I had to watch this because Noni Hazlehurst is in it! That aside, this is a well made horror film much more like the American horror films we are used to. I love Aussie indie cinema and Sting captures the essence of that but goes beyond an amateur feel into the realm of Hollywood. The spider is well done and the acting is great. I believe the same guys who did LOTR made the spider, well as an arachnophobe it got to me! Really fun film, hope there will maybe be a few more of these as I can see the possibility for a franchise. Saw it on the big screen and hope the blu ray has some extras! I can recommend this one to horror fans.
I love found footage films but lately I've seen a bunch that were almost unwatchable. Water Horse was not only watchable, it was fast paced and had a plot. It felt like an older film but I can't pinpoint why. The acting for the most part is good. The leads are very convincing as their characters but a few of the side actors weren't as believable. It's sold as a documentary and begins very much like a Netflix doco, then it dives more into the found footage style without talking heads but comes back to that to bookend it later. The filmmakers clearly watch found footage films and it shows. Overall my biggest complaint was maybe it was too fast paced. I was trying to let the last scene sink in but we were already on to the next bizarre experience. It probably needs to be watched a few times for that reason and not everyone has time for that. I had to look her up but Lauren Grimson is amazing. I will have to watch the other films she is in, her portrayal of the lead was memorable to say the least. Giving this seven stars because it's definitely above many similar films but not quite at the top.
