How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?

S1.E3How Well Do You Know Your Neighbors?

Only Murders in the Building
7.8
  • Sep 6, 2025
  • Only Short shines

Martin Short takes center stage, literally, in the third episode of the series, giving a multi-dimensional performance (strongly comedic of course) as we see him as the flop Broadway director, especially auditioning his neighbors in the building fantasy-style as if casting a show of his a la "A Chorus Line". Nathan Lane guest stars, but is merely a straight man for short as as neighbor who foolishly invests in his shows and now even (absurdly) his podcast about the murder. Sting also has a worthless cameo role.

But even though Steve Martin is the show's creator, segment writer Ben Smith gives Steve lousy material here, playing a very dull character in dull fashion. His comedy bit with a dead cat in the freezer is a total flop, yet it's included in the final print for an audience groan.

And unforgiveably, even though Selena Gomez has been previously teased to the viewer as the key character who actually was involved with the murder victim, we find out nothing about her in this episode, to which she contributes little. Beyond Short's performance, it adds up to a zero.
    The Cruelest Sea of All

    S3.E25The Cruelest Sea of All

    Route 66
    8.0

  • You gotta believe

Stirling Silliphant provides a memorable fantasy segment for "Route 66", quite different from the series' usual drama, as the broad smile and innocent wonder of guest star Diane Baker brings the story to life.

Throughout the show, a sense of wonder is developed, highlighted by the lovely black & white location photography of the aquatic attraction show at Florida's tourist spot. Linc spots a mysterious mermaid, and then Tod falls head over heels in love with her when Baker swims out of nowhere into the attraction's pool and is hired as a swimming mermaid.

Beyond mythical allusions in Silliphant's dialogue to the Sargasso Sea and mermaids, the boys' boss Edward Binns delivers a well-written monologue about an entirely different Seminole myth about a holy ground.

Ultimately, the theme of believing in the unknown, something the hard-headed (and over educated for his role of wandering Beat Generation figure) Milner cannot accept, leading to a powerful open ending.

  • With an edge

This MissaX vignette presents an unusual power struggle: Stepmom Addyson James is attracted to her young stepson Ricky Spanish, but feels guilty about her feelings for him, while Ricky is surly and disrespectful to her.

He criticizes her and is nasty, yet stepmom's submissive personality encourages him to boss her around and eventually overstep: ordering her to have sex with him.

Presented more realistically than the usual sexual fantasy, the scene is a bit edgy, adding to the sexual heat as the duo inevitably get it on. Though the viewer clearly knows where this situation is headed, the actors make it seem real, giving potency to yet another faux incest drama.
