  • A fun throw back.

The original 'Beverly Hills Cop' films were a delightful, although a bit silly, mix of action and comedy. Most of the comedy being provided by Eddie Murphy being over the top. The action sequences were mostly fun and the side characters were all pretty well written and interesting.

Until the third one anyway... the third one is pretty dire. This film even makes a joke about that.

This film is definitely better than the third one. But that isn't hard. This film mostly feels like an homage to the first two films. They even reuse some of the soundtrack. I was very pleased to hear 'The Neutron Dance' make a comeback.

This does the standard decades later reboot trope of the original protagonist having to team up with their estranged child. This film doesn't do this in a bad way or anything... but it is a tad unoriginal.

All-in-all... it is a fun although rather tropey throwback to 80s action comedy. Which was certainly a fun genre back in the day.

  • Surprisingly well-written.

Given the perverted reputation that the main character of this anime has you would be forgiven for dismissing this anime without ever even watching it. And yes... I am not going to deny that Rudeus is a pervert... because he very much is.

What I will say is that it is a testament to the quality of the writing that you feel so much sympathy for him. You find yourself rooting for this degenerate panty-stealing pervert. Largely because this is a story about self-improvement. He is trying to better himself and be the best person that he can be. Yes, he has some rather unsavoury interests, but nobody is perfect, and he is trying to improve.

After royally wasting his first life he sees his reincarnation as a chance to make something of himself. But he still has various fears and insecurities that he needs to work through.

He deals with a lot of difficult things through his life, initially he is even afraid just to leave the farm that he calls home, he deals with severe depression, loss, and some of his mistakes have a massive emotional impact on him.

Tgis show is more than just Rudeus and his issues though. It has a fun collection of side characters and surprising level of world building. Many of the locations are beautiful and have clearly been thought through in a lot of detail. Which is displayed wonderfully in the anime.

There are three ways that you can digest this story, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. There is the anime, the manga, and the light novel. The novel is most in depth and also the least held back when it comes to Rudeus' more dubious interests.

The manga is the least detailed. Because it has the least room to expand on things. But with regards some things, less is more and I do genuinely prefer some things in the manga.

The anime expands on quite a few things. For example, you see more of Rudeus' time as Quagmire in the northern territories. Which was nice... but at the same time, I felt like they went overboard with the breakup that he experiences there.

In the manga he is overheard simply saying a like about how "Big-titted girls are way better than flat chested girls..." whereas in the anime he is overheard going on a massive rant about pretty much everything about the poor girl. I preferred the manga's less over the top approach.

I do think they missed some opportunities... across all three of the mediums, not just the anime. For example... at one point he believes one female character to be a man... albeit an effeminate one. And he has some brief thoughts about whether he might actually like a man. In my mind, he discovers she is actually a woman a little too quickly. It would be much more amusing to see him question his sexuality for a little bit longer.

(This reveal is not a twist... you know she is female long before he does and you know he will find out eventually... I just think it would have been more interesting if it took him longer to find out.)

So yeah, this anime is a wonderful mix of fun, perverted and emotional. And it can be incredibly emotional at times. Don't write it off just because you have heard dubious things about Rudeus. Give it a chance, you may be pleasantly surprised.

  • Well made, but with a couple of niggles.

The prequel covers the events of the first few days after the aliens landed. But it doesn't follow the family from the other two films.

This film follows a terminally ill woman as she goes on a jaunt to NYC with her hospice... then everything goes to hell. Due to her being about to die anyway, she isn't that concerned about getting to evac points or anything. She just wants to protect her cat and get some pizza from a specific pizza place that she used to go to with her dad.

Then she comes across the male lead of this film who is terrified and desperate for somebody to accompany him.

The film follows them attempting to navigate NYC without incurring the wrath of the monsters.

The film is well made, the acting is great and it has some very tense moments. I do however take issue with the cat. It is just a little too convenient. It runs off, gets lost in an unfamiliar environment, surrounded by chaos and insanity... but yeah... of course it just manages to find her again. If this was attempting to be realistic, that cat would have never been seen again. But ya know... movie. It feels like the cat was added just to force some tension in various scenes.

Also... this film seems to have very little understanding of what happens to paper when it gets wet. If you have been fully submerged in water, you aren't pulling a perfectly crisp piece of paper from your pocket with perfectly legible ink on it.

Other than those two things, I did enjoy this film. Although, I do have to admit... it is nowhere near as good as the first one.
