I understand that Showtime is trying to "sex up" Henry VIII, and they've done a good job with that. However, it's difficult to sustain disbelief with the liberties they take with the known facts, but that should not matter either if the portrayal is well done. What is unforgivable is that they've taken an absolutely fascinating subject and a fascinating character and made them both BORING. It seems impossible, but Showtime managed it. Jon Rhys Meyers is very handsome and a good actor, but he is hopelessly miscast in this series, as is Sam Neill. This entire effort can safely be chalked up to "a swing and a miss."
For what it is, Love Actually is a perfect movie. I personally never see movies at the theater, since they're a complete and total ripoff. I saw this one simply because I had a coupon and I'm grateful that I did. At the holidays, some of us need to see a sweet, unrealistic, feel good movie and this is the ultimate sweet movie for me. I'm hardly a romantic. Maybe it's the fact that it's made by the guys from Blackadder, but it really hit a spot with me. It's cheesy and unrealistic, but damn if this isn't one of the most entertaining movies I've seen in ages. I'm an automatic fan of Bill Nighy after seeing this movie. I've heard the phrase "scene-stealer," but never really understood it until seeing this guy in action. All in all, this is not a great movie. It is, however, one of the sweetest feel-good movies I've ever seen, and this is coming from someone who HATES feel-good movies.
I have to watch this movie once a week or I have withdrawals. A lot of people watch it ironically, for the cheesy dancing, bad acting, dolphin sex scene or what have you, but not me. I truly love this flick. I cannot think of another movie in the last several years that was this entertaining. Since this cinematic masterpiece, I have become completely dedicated to Gina Gershon and support her in whatever she's in, simply out of gratitude for this movie. Don't listen to the naysayers! This is seriously one of the greatest movies of all time!
