I find this movie to be really funny on many, many levels. Sure, I think it's a bit much at times, but there are so many great moments in this movie! Also, it reminds me of my college days as both a punk and a theatre major who partied way too much with way too many weird people like Gnome. I guess it's all this truth that I see within this movie that draws me to it, and I frankly enjoy the inner-dialogs. It's evidence of the naive yet self-centered people we were at the time.
If you're looking for a good movie that doesn't demand too much of your own psyche to understand it, then give this movie a watch - besides, Donal Logue's performance is NOT to be missed! He has the best part in the entire movie.
Does anyone know if they filmed this in Vancouver?

I'm not going to give you an examination of the movie as so many others have more than ably done before me here.
What I AM going to do is tell all Americans that THIS MOVIE IS GREAT STORYTELLING. AND, it's an excellent peek at Nova Scotian life as seen through not just Moonie's eyes, but through Lou's as well. The main character of Moonie is a complex person who has too many big ambitions for such a small place, and keeps trying to find a way to get outta town. Lou is a wonderful juxtaposition to Moonie, being more than happy to be in a small town and seeing and learning new things about a new country and a new way of life. I find that personally can relate to both characters, being that I'm an immigrant from Texas who left my small town because it was just too small for this gal, and have found myself on Vancouver Island, learning not just a new way of life, but loving the heck outta it now that I'm here.
This was one of the first Canadian features I saw when I got up here, and I've watched it every time Showcase puts it on, and own the DVD which gets played at least once a month when the television viewings are meager. It really blends comedy and drama into a masterful tapestry of entertainment, and as Nova Scotians here have testified, it's an amazing peek into a way of life that we never experience in America, and frankly, we need to pay more attention to our Canadian neighbours north of the border - they're a wonderful, warm people from coast to coast, and this movie is just one piece of evidence toward that truth.
Rent this movie or buy it on Amazon - you won't regret it!!!
