"EYE OF THE BEAST" is a dull, patently absurd, CGI-laden talk fest with a depressing tone that one can't help find more oppressive than intriguing.
There are parallels between it and the far superior "THE BEAST" from 1996 that have to be noticed. First is the use of "beast" in the title of a giant squid movie. Then the 1996 tagline was "terror runs deep", and here in 2007 it's "fear runs deep". I believe in the credits of this movie it says "beast productions" also.
"THE BEAST" sports a brilliant giant squid, an excellent cast, a very good score, and it's a highly watchable film. "EYE OF THE BEAST" boasts a cast of depressive mumblers, a stupid plot about a giant squid in a lake, and PS2-grade CGI. The creature's eyes are also more like the big endearing eyes of a cow rather than the sinister protruding football eyes of a giant squid.

First off, if you see this available to buy and it's not 3 hours long do not get it. The edited versions remove the special effects scenes but keep all the exposition, making for a very disappointing film.
Very ambitious film with excellent giant squid effects and performances.
Now I want to point out that the bad reviews on here are all very ignorant. To start with there are claims of terrible CGI ruining the film, which is just wrong because the squid is only seen clearly in CGI once and it's brief, so not enough to ruin a film. Then people are claiming that the animatronic is no good. Really? You won't see a better giant squid animatronic anywhere. Only one that comes close is 20,000 Leagues. One person even says that there's a terrible moment of stop motion and there isn't a single frame of stop motion.
Then we have the people moaning that it's a JAWS clone, but one reviewer, obviously a genius, tells us that Peter Benchley made the film and should be ashamed. Of course Benchley did not make the film lol Now the story is very similar to JAWS (unlike other Benchley novels and their film adaptations like THE DEEP, THE ISLAND, and THE GIRL FROM THE SEA OF CORTEZ (no movie)) but so what? Why is that something to complain about when most seamonster films post JAWS ripped it off almost completely? At least this is the same writer and not some copycat hack.
One reviewer claimed this was a copy of TENTACLES and doesn't know that TENTACLES is about a killer octopus and not a squid. Any similarities between the two will come from JAWS, btw. Another claims it copies JAWS 3 and ORCA, but you will find that beyond a certain theme it bears no resemblance to those films.
The only "bad" thing I could write about it is that the squid's behaviour is absolutely ridiculous to the point of being risible if you think about it. It's like this cephalopod serial killer that generally leaves no one alive. But then again isn't that JAWS?
It also somehow manages to swallow people down very quickly and bloodlessly (I assume that's because it was a TV film and aimed at families) despite having a very small mouth and a lethally sharp looking beak.
To be fair if this was a 2 hour film with a big budget, less exposition, same cast, a lot more gore and the same giant squid, it would probably have a big following and get a Blu-ray release.
