  • Buck Jones is ideally cast in his first serial for Universal.

As the roving range detective, battling rustlers with a ghost town hideout, Buck Jones is ideally cast in the first of his four serials for Universal. Madge Bellamy is the feisty heroine and former silent serial stars, William Desmond and Walter Miller, provide excellent support as the crusty rancher and his sneaky foreman. Just about every chapter has Buck and Silver being chased by the bad guys or chasing after them and the plot is enlivened by the ghost town being inhabited by a mystery man. The best line in the movie must be when Buck is trussing up a rustler and says, "I'd rock you to sleep if I could find a rock!" If you like Buck Jones or Western serials, both are combined here to good effect.

  • Cesar Romero takes over the role of the dashing border bandit

Tall, dark, handsome and charming, Cesar Romero's Cisco Kid dazzles the senoritas and baffles the bad guys. With Cisco and Gordito looking out for an orphaned infant, it could have been called "Two Bandits and a Baby." There is action but minimal violence as Cisco outwits rather outfights his adversaries. Veteran Robert Barrat is on entertaining form as the boss bad man and an amusing supporting role goes to George Montgomery, star of some good Westerns in the 1950s.

  • Tom Mix is on fine form as an undercover lawman

Tom Mix is on fine form as an undercover lawman, posing as a badman and even dressing up in a flashy Mexican outfit to romance the heroine. His mission is to infiltrate an outlaw gang and identify their mysterious mastermind. Tom and Tony pull off some good riding stunts, Fred Kohler provides excellent support as the surly heavy, and the photography is better than in some A movies. If you've never seen a Tom Mix sound Western, start with this one.
