In Raymond Queneau's "Zazie dans le métro" (transferred to the screen by Louis Malle, 1960),Zazie's dream (to take the Parisian 's subway , the metro) never comes true.
In "le rendez-vous de l'été" ,Blandine's dream to attend the swimming competition of the olympic games Paris 2024 and to cheer the athlete she admires,Beryl Gastadello , will never come true .Nothing happens .
Still, for the viewer,something has happened ; "le rendez-vous de l'été " a short movie (75 min) is a very good movie, if only for its spontaneity ,its simplicity and its excellent principal ,Blandine Madec,admirable in her naiveté and in her kindness.
She's denied her entrance, her place in a youth hostel ,she's arrested and ends up in a police station where her plea gets straight to the heart ;she meets a rather selfish half- sister who exploits her generosity and does not even show any gratitude to her.
In her obstacle course ,she will meet a nice boy,Benjamin , a security guard ,who opens up for her the swimming pool ,in the night ,when the place is deserted; they take to each other immediately;in their second meeting , they talk about their life : she tells him she used to live with a person (but doesn't precise it was with a girl )Still, there's a good chemistry without them ,without even a kiss.
The other side of the mirror of the Olympic Games is not passed over in silence;to give the French capital its full prestige(??), 19,256 persons (including 4,550 minors) were expelled from Paris .Paul , the half-sister's ex ,was demonstrating against that. In the police station , Blandine probably thinks about all the forgotten ones of this great event.
When she returns to her native Normandy, Blandine did learn something ,but her generosity of spirit is intact .

In Marmande (Lot-et-Garonne), Pierre (Pierre Richard) has created L'Arc-en-ciel (The Rainbow), an association dedicated to housing about ten people who have experienced psychiatric trauma following painful experiences. But the mayor (Charlotte de Turckheim) is requisitioning the property to create a parking lot requested by a contractor (François Berléand). Pierre mobilizes everyone around him to raise the money needed to buy back the house.
They are cracked but they can break ; it happens to one of Pierre's protégés ; to make money to save their house, they use means which the police do not approve of.
Pierre Richard's career (he's 91) is still buoying ;he also plays a prominent part in "la vallée des fous" ; Bernard Le Coq ,François Berléand and Charlotte de Turkheim provide good support;it's a spotty film ,but there are successful moments: the team, washing the roofs ("it's mandatory " they say ); or the contractor's daughter , a bubble head girl in love with an awkward lump of a youth ."You should not mix with those people " daddy says .Or the girl who sees her dream come true:to perform on stage :her "en rouge et noir" is out of tune but ,no matter,it's the thought that counts .
