  • What it Says, Not What You Think

This is one of those movies that you should just watch without reading what other people say in reviews, without watching the trailer, and without even reading the description. I've never seen a movie this badly misdescribed, misreviewed, or mismarketed.

All you need to know is this is a movie about "Last Survivors" and it is a thriller. Everything else I read and heard, from almost everyone and everything, was flat-out wrong. To the point that far more of the critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, which gave this movie a 72% average, were more accurate than any user reviews on IMDB or even the movie description. And, in my experience, that never happens. In this rare case it's Opposite Day. On this movie RT critics are right, IMDB reviewers are wrong.

Whatever you think after watching this movie all the way through, first and foremost, this movie is a father-son movie, with a whole lot of family reality. I am a father with three adult kids, two that are sons, and I related to the father and son, both. We try to raise our kids perfectly, as we know the world, putting them into a protective shell, but they always have to break out eventually. The world is not perfect. In fact, it sucks and all good parents try to protect their kids as long as they can, especially from the kids of bad parents and just bad people.

In the end, this movie ends tragically, more than most Hollywood movies. My wife actually gasped at the conclusion, the part before the hopeful ending. Practically nothing in this movie is predictable, as long as you watch it for more than 30 minutes, which I know most IMDB reviewers did NOT.

Yes, this post-apocalyptic thriller, as described on IMDB, actually has a hopeful ending. It is not predictable, in no way, shape, or form. It made me think of the holiday Hallmark TV movies. The part that made my wife gasp did not.

The difference between this movie and horror movies and sappy Hallmark holiday movies is it fits our reality in this world today. All of us.

So, I give it a 7/10. On IMDB I gave it an extra star to rate it 8/10 to make up for all the terribly inaccurate IMDB reviews that obviously never gave it a chance.

  • So Many Layers of Meaning in this Film

This movie has become a personal cult classic. I watch it many, many times a year, just because I've gleaned so many hidden meanings and actions from throughout the film.

I love the time period, only because it's always seemed, in so many movies and books, to be a required insight into how an entire nation could slip into a place that normalizes murderous genocide. How did so many people just go along with this, ignore it and convince each other that it wasn't really happening? Pieces of it are all on display in this movie.

We Americans always tell ourselves this could never happen here. As a German American, I have always, for over 40 years, told myself that it's up to people like me to always remember that this can happen in any country. To always keep a cautious eye open, to warn my countrymen when it is happening again.

Today, movies like this one are the most important thing to keep refreshed in our minds as we watch current events. To make sure that what started over a century ago and produced the result we see in this movie never happens again, anywhere.
