I will start off with the biggest problem, which is minor to some, but very annoying to me. For some reason, since the main characters are German, they decided to do the opening and closing narration, as well as the names of the seasons during the film, in German, no subtitles (unless you have the option to turn them on when you stream it.) The opening narration gives the basics of how these people came to remote island of Floreana in the Galapagos to escape the society that they felt was in decline. There was no good reason to put them in German, except to "act artistic", which I personally hate. I would also recommend doing brief research on the interesting prologue of this story, AFTER watching the movie, unless you don't care about spoilers. The actual movie was very well done, great acting, atmosphere, settings, and the plot had some unexpected twists and turns. If you speak German, you might give this film a 9, but wasting my time with pretentiousness costs my rating 2 stars lol.
How this ever got made truly puzzles me. Not going to name anything specific, it's just dumb from beginning to end. The plot, acting, special effects are all terrible. How someone can twist the cute kids show into this nonsense defies reason. I could see making a movie about how stoned everyone was who made the original show, that would actually make sense and could be amusing to watch. There were a few of those shows back in the 60s, even Mr Rogers had some trippy stuff at times. This is a horror movie where you pretty much WANT everyone to die because they are so annoying. Save yourself 80+ minutes if you're looking for a horror movie, nothing to enjoy here.
We watched this show when it came out and thought it was decently funny at the time. The definite highlight is Robin Williams demonstrating his genius over and over in every episode. He was maybe the most talented comic actor in modern history, and not just during funny scenes. We are so lucky that he decided to return to TV, even if it was only for 22 episodes. The rest of the cast is respectable as well, I would love to chat with them about what it was like to work with him, the outtakes at the end of every episode give us a tiny glimpse into what that was like. Anyone who is a fan of the classic sitcom format or Williams will enjoy this show.
