I will always love Korean movies for their unique plots but this one was let down by the character building. While it may be realistic that a criminal has a very shallow personality, it makes his (the protagonist) character quite boring and repetitive.
The settings and shooting of the movie were incredibly well done which makes it so difficult to give this a 6/10. I never once felt that the characters were in any time period except the one that they were being portrayed in. One minor fault was that they would sometimes jump between years and it was a little hard to remember when things were happening.
Overall, not necessarily a movie worth watching. Interesting plot, boring characters, well shot.

Solid movie that shows a difficult time in South Korea.
As an American, movies like these are why I enjoy foreign made movies. Stories that I would never have seen are displayed in a way that strays from conventional Western style/form. For me, what really made this a good movie was the set design, the story, and the protagonist (actor Song Kang-ho). Without one of these components, I can't see this being anywhere near as good as a viewing experience.
Only complaint is that the flow of the story felt disrupted a couple of times and left me confused for a minute or two before understanding what was happening. (I've heard the criticism that American movie-goers desire a movie where they're spoon-fed the plot haha.)

Perhaps my memory escapes me, but this is one of the only representations I can think of that doesn't portray a middle-eastern militant group as a band of goons with no common sense.
I feel like this movie didn't perform well in box office because it feels like a foreign movie that was produced by an American studio. What I mean is you have a pretty unique and interesting story but certain choices made in production just give it a little off feeling.
That being said, this is a movie that I think aged quite well with casting and acting that seems to fit pretty well. I really liked the staging in the movie and it added a lot to the feel.
