  • Funnier than I thought it would be

This movie was funnier than I thought it would be. Part of it was filmed near where we live.

Initially I didn't want to see it because it wasn't true to the book. However, we decided to give it a try, as we had a free PPV from our satellite company.

There were many funny parts: the infomercial, the picture turns to a folder out, the amusement park ride.

Come on people, get lost in the imagination of other people. Use your imagination. Dr Seuss wrote excellent kid's books, but this is definitely not a kid's movie, unless the kid is under 7. I think it was mis-marketed. It was geared to a much younger market than it should have been. I think if it was geared towards teen agers and adults, it would've done a much better job at the theater.

  • Acting was fine, story wasn't up to snuff

I was looking forward to this movie, as I like Jennifer Connelly and Ben Kingsley. Two glaring points in the story which should not have been missed: time frame and law enforcement accuracy.

My husband and I were the youngest persons in the theater, and we are in our middle 40s. I remember when the Shah was overthrown, so I was able to place the movie setting to the late 80s to early 90s, at the very latest. Non-California drivers wouldn't know if the two very prominent license plates displayed in the movie were chronologically accurate. When Ben Kingsley's character mentioned something about it being 10 years past the Shah's being deposed, the fear of jail, police, and deportation made sense. In 2004, this wouldn't be accurate.

As for the law enforcement accuracy, Ron Eldard's character just went way overboard and took too much liberty with what he could or couldn't do. When Ben Kingsley's character was viewing the FTO book, the pages contained personal and professional information. It would make more sense to just show him pictures. And, close to the end, with Ron's shirt tail out, he's just drawing attention to himself, instead of trying to appear normal.

The acting was very good on everyone's part. Ron Eldard is getting better and better.

  • Quirky movie

Mystery Train is the type of movie that is over before you know it. Serious and funny at the same time. I like the layout of the picture, how all the people's live inter-mingled without touching each other and time started over when the next group of people started their adventure.

Made in 1989, this movie still lives today, just like Elvis! Actually, this movie will be around for a very long time. With quirky being the "norm" for TV and movies now, it fits into the current movie atmosphere even more. I think this one fell in between the time of Twin Peaks & Northern Exposure on network TV and Six Feet Under and Dead Like Me on cable movie channels.

This one ranks way up there with Momento as one of my favorite movies.
