  • Very funny mockumentary

I glad I picked up this DVD because it has a down-to-earth level of humor that I find missing in so-called sitcoms. I actually laughed out loud at many of the scenes even though I could pretty much tell what was coming. It was the actors' great ability to make those scenes larger than life that did it for me. This movie also takes some hard swings at the Hollywood mentality. For those of you who are Mon-Fri 9-to-5ers like me, this is the PERFECT Friday night after-work-drink-a-couple-of-beers movie. While I think that Brandon Routh, Marc Blucas, Ray Wise and Lance LeGault are the standout stars, I found myself logging on to IMDb during the movie to check out the other people.

  • Fun! Fun! Fun!

My wife and I saw this movie at the Utopia Film Festival in Greenbelt MD and she wants the DVD the day it comes out. The three lead actors, Johnny Francis Wolf, Megan Pearson & Joseph L. Johnson are perfect in their roles. How can you not want to see a movie that has Ninja Nuns and Kung-Fu Santas? BTW, if they ever make a biopic of Christopher Reeve, Wolf should get the role. There are a couple minor plot points that bugged me but the crowd laughed and jumped in all the right places and applauded for the film. Jamie Nash's clever dialogue was the highlight of the film. And there are quite a few homages paid to a number of pop culture icons including the magic flashing Kolchak camera that protects you from everything. I hope you have the pleasure of seeing this movie soon.

  • Bruce Springsteen & Cold Comfort Farm

While living in Europe, I saw a very snotty BBC interviewer ask Bruce Springsteen if he was disappointed that the sales of his albums HUMAN TOUCH & LUCKY TOWN did not match the level of the BORN IN THE USA album. Bruce looked at this guy with a flash of annoyance then told him something like "as long as I can play in a bar and make people forget their troubles for a few hours, it's alright." In my first screen writing class, my teacher told us to adapt something rather than do an original piece of work. So, I did the first 10 pages of a Green Lantern script. A COLD COMFORT FARM fan was confused. He whined that my work was about power rings and aliens and what was that all about. The teacher aimed an evil eye his way and said: "It's a comic book." Sky Captain is a comic book that, for about 2 hours, made me forget whatever annoyances I have to deal with on a daily basis. This movie also committed the cardinal sin of assuming that viewers would be able to fill in the blanks like Joe, Polly & Frankie had a triangular relationship in China. I like that in a movie. This very stylized, entertaining work of love has set a new standard like Star Wars & Memento did. For those who want reality in movies, for those who need every-little-detail spoon-fed to them, please stay home. Save your money and leave a seat empty for someone who wants to be transported to a world of yesterday & tomorrow that collide beautifully. Were there things about this movie that I would have done differently? Most definitely. And I'll do them as soon as I get the deal Kerry Conran got. For those of you who think they can do better than Kerry Conran, go for it.
