After watching Prometheus, I decided to move in the chronological order of the Alien Universe, so the next film to watch was Alien: Covenant. This 2017 science fiction horror film was directed and produced by Ridley Scott and written by John Logan and Dante Harper. It features the returning star Michael Fassbender, with Katherine Waterston and Billy Crudup. The film reveals what happened to the surviving members of Prometheus, android David and Elizabeth Shaw.
The plot of the new movie revolves around a spaceship Covenant in 2104, which was sent to colonize the planet Origae-6, carrying 2000 colonists and 1140 human embryos in cryogenic stasis. A sudden neutrino burst damages the ship and kills several colonists, including Captain Branson. During repairs, the crew detects a human voice broadcast from an uncharted planet. Despite the crew's disagreement, the new captain, Chris Oram, decides to investigate this planet and sends a lander to the planet's surface.
The team discovers a crashed alien ship and, after entering it, meets David, an android from the spaceship Prometheus, who survived together with Elizabeth Shaw. He tells about their 10-year-old mission and that only two of them succeeded in surviving. He claims that he and Elisabeth arrived here on the alien ship, but, unfortunately, they lost control, and it crashed, leading to Elisabeth's death and releasing a deadly pathogen into the air. A few crew members are unknowingly infected, leading to a gradual loss of control of the whole mission.
Alien: Covenant is a sequel to Prometheus, so it brings up philosophical issues similar to those in the first movie. We see that android David loses his belief in mankind and decides to replace humanity with a new species. That shows how complicated the relationship between parents and children could be and that we are too far from completely implementing AI in our lives. The film was not very successful at the box office and, generally, was more criticized than Prometheus. Many critics admit that this film was made as a response to Prometheus's criticisms, but trying to appease fans of that film as well doesn't entirely work.
Finally, I found Alien: Covenant to be a good science fiction horror story. Unfortunately, the film tries to include too many different themes from various genres, which results in a messy experience that is sometimes exquisite and, at other times, infuriating. Still, I would recommend watching it to all Alien franchise fans."
