  • Terrible

This 1988 film stars Justine Bateman as the lead singer of a band called "The Mystery" that spends Summer performing in a bar hoping to get a break. The film is notable for introducing us to an up-and-coming young star named Julia Roberts, who would go on to fame and super stardom.

The film is also known by its alternate title "Girls of Summer."

In the wake of her co-star's Michael J. Fox's successful transition into feature films, Ms. Bateman felt that she could also do the same, and she chose this film as a start to that transition.

However, she definitely made a wrong choice here.

This film is not only awful, but dull and uninteresting. Ms. Bateman can't sing, and even the music being mimed by the cast is also not very good. With the exception of three songs, such as Rock and Roll Rebels by John Kay and Steppenwolf, Maybe by The Chantels, and the Love Theme by Michael Columbier, the soundtrack really stinks. I've heard muzak versions of the rest of the songs that were much better than these bad recordings. IMHO, these great songs supposedly by "The Mystery" are ruined by the lacklustre recordings of them. The whole film is a miserable train wreck, with lacklustre acting, poor writing and directing, and a lacklustre soundtrack.

Fortunately for Ms. Bateman, she found success in other avenues of entertainment, and again, Julia Roberts became an international star, which makes it a good thing that their careers weren't negatively affected by this train wreck of a film.

I watched this on a local syndicated station during an afternoon matinee on the channel. After viewing it, I saw why it wasn't a success.

Do yourself a favor by passing on this if it comes to TV. It really is that bad and lousy.

  • An Above Average Made For TV Movie

I, Desire premeired on TV in the year 1982. The film was a joint production between the USA and Canada. The film stars David Naughton, Marilyn Jones, Dorian Harewood and Barbara Stock as the title character, who masquerades as a lady named Mona. It also features a pre-Child's Play Brad Dourif in a small supporting role.

One night while in the coroner's area, David Balsinger (Naughton) sees an unusual case of a man bitten on the neck and all his blood drained from him. In time, he becomes obsessed with finding out more, but winds up getting into trouble when he meets a mystery young lady named Mona (Stock), who unbeknown to him is the culprit who's being searched. Along the way, his obsession becomes stronger despite those in his life advising him to let go of it. He then meets a defrocked Roman Catholic priest named Paul (Dourif) who's also obsessed with the whole thing and advises David that her name is Desire, and that he's determined to try and stop her despite nobody taking him seriously. Pretty soon, David has to use his wits to try and avoid being her next victim.

Prior to it's USA premeire on the ABC TV network on November 15th, 1982 on "The ABC Monday Night Movie", the film premiered first on Canadian TV. After its success there, it was shown in the USA on ABC.

I, Desire is an above average TV film. The film is well written, well directed and the performances by the actors are terrific. Naughton is superb as David Balsinger. Brad Dourif is also great as Paul, and last but not least, Barbara Stock is very convincing in her right on performance as the title character. Each and every actor delivers top notch performances. The suspense keeps the viewer glued to the film until the end. I, Desire is a technically well made film for TV. The film is truly terrifying as it keeps the viewer on the edge of their seat. It truly carries the viewer over the edge until it ends.

The film was a part of the vampire film craze that started in 1979 when Frank Langella portrayed "Dracula" in the 1979 film readaption released by Universal Pictures, with Langella reprising his role of the title character after he portrayed him on stage. In its wake, numerous vampire themed films were made. Not only that, it also created the myth that Desire was the daughter of Count Dracula, which has never been confirmed nor denied by those who worked on this film, but IMHO, does make for some pretty interesting conversation.

I, Desire should be a part of every horror film lovers film library. No horror film fan should be without this above average TV film in their libraries.

  • An Excellent Educational, and Realistic, Series.

Inside/Out debuted in the early 1970's on PBS. The series served as an educational tool aimed at children.

The series was unique as the episodes didn't have endings, which was intended to have children talk about how they would react, or resolve, to a particular situation that was the theme of the episode.

The series focused on real life issues that children faced within their lives, such as parental divorce, deaths in the family, peer pressure and many others. The series dealt with these issues very realistically and dramatically. It also influenced future PBS series' that would follow its formula, such as, Trade-offs, On the Level, Give & Take, and Thinkabout, which were aimed at elementtary school children in the same manner as this series was, while two others, Bread & Butterfies and Self Incorporated were aimed at teenagers in both middle and high schools. It also led to an updated version entitled "Looking From the Inside Out".

The series was shown on TV during the daytime school hours, which would have schools in both the USA and Canada turn on their TV's in classes so their students could watch them. At other times, the episodes would be shown on 16mm films in schools.

This series dealt with numerous social issues that children faced within their lives. The series was very realistic in how these issues were portrayed. The best thing is that the series didn't sugar coat anything within their episodes, but was real and educational in its dramatic portrayal of these issues. It showed children that were going through numerous things and unlike most TV series', the series had cliffhanger endings, which was intended for the children to discuss with teachers on how they would deal with, or resolve, the particular issues being portrayed in the series, which made for interesting ideas and suggestions by the children. It also educated children in numerous ways.

The series was produced by National Instructional Television (later Agency for Instructional Television), with support from Exxon Corporation, alongside numerous PBS stations throughout the USA filming episodes. There were also a few episodes produced in Canada as the series was also shown in Canada for Canadian elementary school children.

Again, the series debuted on PBS in the early 1970's, and was continuously repeated throughout the rest of the decade, and into the early 1980's independent of the PBS feed.

I remember watching this series myself even before I started going to school. I used to watch Sesame Street religiously during my childhood and I would lay down on the couch and watch whatever came on after Sesame Street. In its own unique way, this series helped prepare me for school and the world. Many of the episodes really got to me, especially the one about parental divorce (Breaking Up) as my mother and father were divorced as I learned something from it.

This series has been forgotten by the USA educational system. I wonder why. IMHO, this series is still as relevant today as it was back in the time when it was initially shown. Today's children still face the same issues as those within that particular time period did. The USA educational system needs to seek out this series again and show it to today's children. Today's kids need to see this series because even though the times change, the issues discussed on this series are still being faced by today's children. We definitely need this to be revived and shown to the children of today as the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Overall, an excellent series that's both educational and realistic in its educatiing children, which needs to be rediscovered by the current USA educational system and shown to today's children as its still as relevant as it was back in the day when initially shown.
