Well, maybe overall it only deserves 4 stars, not 5, and I do NOT recommend watching this, even just to waste time on a lazy afternoon. I only stuck it out because I'm out in the country with no internet, but this was downloaded on my ipad, so with nothing else to watch I made it to the end ...after 4 sittings.
The main problem is a love story that plays like fanfiction fantasy from a horny 13-15 year old virgin really wanting to get laid. It's really too bad because the dialog is okay and the acting is too. But it's apparent the scifi plot is just there to carry the screenwriter's fantasy love life, hoping no one notices it's really his soft sex fantasy.
Of course maybe the writer was trying to write to the 13-15 teen boy audience. I hope not, because then the script is maybe only 3 stars.
The actors are okay, the dialog i enjoyed, but the characters are pointless. Ironside is wasted(no need for the character at all), and the piddly detail of a scientist not knowing left from right was just as bad.
And the major question of Why a wormhole? Was never part of the plot. -which i sort of liked.

The title the apprentice refers to the storyline being the time when roy cohn was part of trmp's world. The idea being that roy was trmp's mentor and trmp his apprentice learning the ways of roy's world. But to make their story fit the title they had to soften some ugly facts we know about trmp and ignore others. So the story ends up being a soft construct about trmp, but the story never really focuses on roy cohn either, so the viewer is left in a sort of netherworld. In reality all known facts point to the idea that trmp has always been the trmp we know: a bad seed as a kid who only needed cohn to get ahead. The movie falsely suggests trmp was taught how to be a bad guy. (again: the facts tell us trmp was always a bad guy who simply wanted to learn how to sharpen his skills.)
so, the movie is a puff piece.
Another problem with the film is the fact trmp has always looked, well, lust like what he is, an nasty little rich kid. The actor playing trump never carries that feeling. In this movie trmp could be john boy of the waltons when he should feel and look like draco malfoy. It's a major failing.
