"Maruja" was the one of the first Puerto Rican films made with local talent. When it openned in 1959 it made stars of its leads. The story is somewhat clichéed and you see its denouement coming a mile away. What the film does most effectively is show a slice of life in Puerto Rico during the 50's. The local scenery is shown gorgeously and the supporting cast( who all became staples of PR television) is very professional. A must see for those of us who grew up in PR and remember its stars.
"Los Díaz de Doris" is a charming family drama about a divorced woman with two teenaged children trying to make ends meet. Her ex-husband is alien to the needs of his children and Doris is losing her grip on them. Everything is looking grim for Doris when a new man enters her life out of the blue. There's nothing new in the picture but it's all handled very efficiently and the cast of locals is perfect!
