Vincent Price and American International does it again! This is wonderful! Absolutely wonderful. Thank God MGM has released all of these great old films on DVD. I got this one on a double feature DVD with the Tomb of Ligeia.I was engrossed. Vincent Price is mesmerising. He really shows off his chops here. This man was amazing. I wish there were more actors like him. What a great man. What a great performance. If this had been released in theaters, he would have won an Oscar. American International films may be laughable now, but they sure did revive the careers of some of the greats, and gave careers to truly talented youngsters. They had a niche in both markets! Thank God for Vincent, AI, and Independent Cinema!
This movie is beautiful. Its a consummate midnight movie. Okay, so Paul Williams, Bill Finley, and Jessica Harper may not be the best actors in the world. And sure, the effects, set, camera moves, and acting is SO VERY seventies, but that doesn't take away from the most beautiful score of any made for film musical, heart tugging writing, and a great villain. Also, the humor of this film is great. De Palma was obviously having fun. I mean, this movie can be viewed as a bad piece of overblown trash, or a studio trying to capitalize on a midnight movie craze, but wheres the fun in that? The direction is solid, the music is relevant, and the movie tells a story. Its fun, entertaining, and emotional. What more do you want from a movie? Plus, you have Rod "Twilight Zone" Serling doing the opening narration! What a beautifully cheesy movie.
This movie was great. It wasn't the best Cohn bros, but it was a great remake that definitely shows that Tom Hanks is still good at comedy and that making a movie that is just full of intelligent "dumb" comedy is still possible. The original Lady Killers is great. Peter Sellers, Alec Guiness...wonderful. But this one was good too. Now, I know a lot of people said this was a bad movie or an ill-concived movie. I don't agree. Had any other directors worked on it, it would have been much different and not as dark or as funny. So nay sayers, keep nay saying, as it is your right. But this movie tickled me. Every word out of Tom Hank's mouth was amazing. This just proves how good of an actor he is. All of those lines seemed extremely hard to learn and then spew out at the rate he did. I'll soon be adding this one to my film library. And I must, MUST have waffles.
