Having seen the original various times and actually working for 2 decades on cruise ships gives you a bit of insight in the workings of this movie. It's fictional, it's impossible, it's full of faults, but, it's exciting nevertheless. It's a good remake of the original, actually it's much better as the original. See it, but keep an open mind, it's not realistic, but it's gripping nevertheless. It's really funny that already in the opening scene a major fault is made by the movie makers, a major fault which indicates something has to go wrong with this vessel. Intrigued??? When in the opening scene the virtual flyby of the vessel is done showing you it in all it's greatness you can't fail to notice that the lifeboats of the vessel are hung the wrong way around, the propellers which are at the back of the lifeboat are facing forward (there is actually a lot of details that are surprisingly realistic and possible).
A former UK officer returns to the island of Crete where he played a roll in the resistance movement after the nazi's occupied the island and the British forces where overrun. It's however more as just a vacation meeting old friends, visiting the places from the past, there is a mysterious history involved, he has an old romance but also made enemies from the past. Film is set on Crete in Greece and was for a good part actually filmed on the island. Colorfull TV series which I've seen in 1977 and never since but still can remember vividly, can't wait for it to finally come out on DVD!
If you like war movies not directly about fighting and giving you splendid feeling of being in the movie during the war this is it. Great acting, great plot, not to be missed. It's interesting from the beginning to the end. German master spy discovers what potentially can be disasterous for the allies, where D-day is going to take place. Trying to get the info to Germany the English intelligence is on his heels. 10+++, see it, live it!
