This cartoon is a wonderful example of Robert Clampett's genius. Perfect musical score; the scene with the scatting trumpet player who blasts Waller "out of this world" into a "Porky in Wackyland" world is an unheralded masterpiece. This one equals or even tops the infamous "Coal Black and De Sebben Dwarfs" for sheer enjoyment. Certainly worth seeking out.
WOW. This short is possibly the best short to show to an adult that thinks that cartoons are for kids. Parents...be warned. Though the title might suggest kids stuff, this is not! I'm not into censorship one bit, but keep this away from kids until they are old enough. Worth seeking out just to be pretty surprised by the outrageous violence. The funny thing is, the violence is not cartoony, it just looks disgusting. If you want to watch this cartoon beware - the story line is terrible, and it's badly made.
Nicodemus sneaks out of church, only to find himself knocked unconcious by a fence post. He awakens in the devil's court, and has to "give the devil his due". The cartoon isn't really racist at all, except for a scene in which a mom is putting shoe polish on her child's head. The rest of it really celebrates African-Americans as singing, happy folks, and isn't ment to be malicious. Then again, it might not appeal to everyone, but it was made 66 years ago (almost 67), and things have changed. Worth seeking out.
