I have to say it is quite obvious why this film swept the Oscars awards. Captivating picture, detailed performance, deep thought, valid illustrations. Although some clips and characters are a bit weird, surprisingly a taste of dark humor is added, spicing up the story.
Besides, 'American Beauty' reminds me of a paralleled story, An elephant sitting still, which similarly reveals the tiredness and irrationality among the society.
Personally speaking, the plastic bags metaphor is a little stereotypical and the camera guy is kinda creepy, which got me a bit distracted.
Above all, a decent work can speak for itself and pop out spontaneously. Light 9 is a valid score, worth watching for several times.

Yi Yi is a film which doesn't need much of explanations to understand and appreciate. Basically all the contents are right on the nose.
Without many painstakingly designed instructions, the general outline is about one simple family that consists three generations while each family members has their own issues to tackle. Not only have they encountered diverse conundrums and challenges, but also similarities are shared resulting a loop to trap all of them.
Quoting from the movie itself, sometimes things do get monotonous and repetitive, which is true that occasionally we might get lost and hesitate whether the right choices are made. However, even if everything has a restart, we would still regret the another possibility while individual satisfaction can never be achieved. Suffice to say, the director may indicate that whatever your current situation is, just live in the moment, cherish the person you love, do not be occupied by the things we can't control despite the nihilism is the eventual landscape after all. To be honest, this kinda reminds me of the film 'Meet Joe Black' that transmits homogeneous thoughts.
In a nutshell, all we need to do is relax and enjoy this therapeutic process to calm your nerves.
